Valve clearance new 04 550 owner

Hi
I recently got an 04 550 and am trying to get valve clearances right.
I am reading conflicting info on here, some say 1/6 exhaust and intake, others saying 1/8, others 1/6 intake 1/5 exhaust.
I tried 1/6 both and now it impossible to start especially hot, and getting loud backfires, plus auto decomp doesn’t seem to be working.
Thanks

Not sure what you mean by 1/6.
The '05 550 manual says 0,1mm for both intake and exhaust (using a feeler gauge)

When the auto decomp stops working the clearance in the exhaust rocker is too big.
Try 1/8.
The adjuster screws are M6x0,75mm.
0.75: 8....and you'll land somewhere in between 0.08-0.12mm which is fine.

Thanks for that, I tried making exhaust clearance tighter but doesn’t seem to help. I think I’ll have to look into doing the auto decompression

Thanks for the clarification. It sounds like an easy way to do something that must be checked often. It does mess with the OCD in me that says, "The manual says to use a feeler gauge - so use one or blow up your engine." Luckily, my OCD side doesn't always rule the day.

Now may be a good time to take the rocker cover off and have a look at the autodecompressiion device. It is not uncommon for the decomp spring to lose tension. It can become unseated or just weakened from use. The decomp itself is also a wear item.
Taffy sells the combo if you need them.

Thanks, yes I have just have rocker cover off as we speak. The spring doesn’t seem to be doing much at all. I think the shaft looks ok.

When you pull the decomp away from its resting position it should snap back into place when you let go.
Yes thanks. The spring has had it, tail broken off, plus very weak. Thanks for your help. Have ordered a new spring. John (orangeberg) has also been helping me and talking me through.
Hopefully I can now set valves to 1/6 and it will start off button

In 2005 they went to a slightly larger starter motor on the 550/650 models. You may benefit from an uprated starter motor if you still have starting difficulties.

Ok thanks for that, I’ll look into getting one
