Valve clearance adjustment.

Can someone please give me a step by step approach to adjusting valve clearances on a FE 550 '07'. Heres what I know: clearance is .12mm. Thats it.
KTM's have a lock bolt for top dead centre. Bergs?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Yes it is the first time I have done this, but I have to start doing it at sometime.
I am not having any luck with the search function on the web site. 8O

hey that's really really clear! i would like to try it on my own!

is there any one who has pics of valve clearance procedure?

thanks steve! tomorrow i'll try. i'd like to remove the left carter to see if i have the top dead point signed by the husaboys

I've checked/adjusted valves on my 05 FS650 twice, Dale's explanation shown in the link provided by FC501 is great.
Have a question, though...
How come I can't adjust the intake valves when the exhaust valves are wide open and vice versa? Seems to me they're not going to be open at the same time so I'd think it'd be a great time to adjust the other.
Please show me the light.
Lou.

its in the doc including photos mr i-hate-rocks. pictures supplied by the legendary bergoroadracer.

I just wanted to recall Dales input on the 1/6 valve adjust. He knows a lot more than I do about motors so it made me consider when he said he couldn't get the .12 feeler gage in there after setting 1/6. What do the pro's say here? I have an 05 650 . Does it make a difference? Dale has an 04. Should an adjustment leaning towards 1/5 be considered? I'm at 1/6 now for about 12 hours and the idle is starting to drop a little which tells me they are on the snug side.

thats been my view for a while now. no matter who the manufacturer is there is ALWAYS a larger gap on the exhaust than the inlet. THEY CAN'T THEREFORE BOTH BE RIGHT. NO IFS OR BUTS!!!!!

i see burnt exhaust valve seats all the time. but the inlet seats always sit nicely. the exhaust valves never suffer from tuliping or damage. as for all that missfiring on the overrun? might - might not have something to do with it for some?

i think if you have a bike with the modern tensioner blade and even better - the '08; '000' cams it's a good idea. if you want to stop wear though the only real way to do this is to go to the above two items and dual valve spring it.

THANKS AGAIN TAFFY. I believe I do have the modern tensioner haven't I ? Anyway I feel comfortable going with a big 1/6 next time. 1/5 is probably too loose. Even if 1/6 =.10 to add another 1/24 (1/4 of 1/6 turn) would be 1/5 or another .025. That added to .10= .125. Too big at 1/5. AND YES I REMEMBER YOU SAYI NG 1/6 = .12 WE WILL NEVER DOUBT YOU!! Im just learning stuff here. I'm in the cosmetic dept. Paint,Body and complete restoration. You should see the 66 impala I restored to nearly concourse last year. Longboarded down to plained out perfection, candy apple red, color sand and buff. But I really respect you for your Mech. knowledge and sharing very inportant stuff here.
Oh the perfect combination of a mechanic and a painter. Together they make beautiful smooth running machines.

well as you say: 1/6th is 0.12mm and 1/5th well, it would be 1/5th of 0.7mm which adds up to .14mm and that is about 1/6th more. a typical bike or car would have a 4 and 5 or some would be 7 and 9 gap for inlet and exhaust.

so i think you'd agree that the ratio of difference is about spot on. i have found that going to 1/5th of a turn is actually quite hard to 'picture' in your mind as you adjust the screw.

all i did the first two times i did this was to visualise the 1/6th which i find easy and then visualise the 1/4 which is also. then fix a gap mentally.

thank god it's only two of the valves!

JOIN IN THE REST OF YOU - UNLESS THESE FRACTIONS HAVE ALL BEEN TOO MUCH FOR YOU.....

another thing:
owners that have had the tappets at a 1/6th may have carboned up exhaust valves and leakage problems already. so perhaps joeusa can help us but they used to use some stuff over here called REDEX and this cleaned your valves up. you put some in your fuel and it de-carboned them.

but i believe that done from a (top end) rebuild the results will and are going to be interesting. i can't say though that i want to have reason to re-examine the top end to see....

Thanks, So what your saying is 1/6 on intake and about 1/5 on exhaust. That is if you can find 1/5 easily.

I aint too smart and have a hard time figuring 1/5. I use the flat of the nut for the 1/6 method and have used it since 2001 for all valves and it seems to be ok for my bikes.

Ride the bike. Gets hard to start, loosen the valves. Ride the bike

What oil should I use ??

My 550 is overheating

What tires should I run??

My 02 wont start on the button

It only starts sometime it seems to quit when it gets hot.

I get white smoke and its hard to start after falling down.

Rad Hose keeps coming off my 01 501

you haven't been reading too close lately! i know, the eyesight etc or you been seen bein too 8) !

we now have 501's starting on the button first time everytime and no need for a kicker at all! look for arkley123 in a thread named 'sitting in the bath' which is just below.....

just to add to what i was saying earlier about the exhausts not seating right down because we don't allow enough clearance....we've never asked not "why" the tappets tighten - we know that, but "WHICH" tappets tighten and then asked why they do it?

well, how about this: the exhausts haven absolutely marginal clearance and are possibly only saved by wear in the followers (this loosens the tappets), even the carbon build up loosens them as well as the shafts (which also loosens the tappets) so we have three things wearing and meant to make things looser but infact they are often marginal.

so i put the exhaust problem down to too-tight a gap.

we haven't spotted this because:
the inlets tulip on the 35s and especially the 37s. because they tulip they need adjusting. on the inlets you still have 2/3 of the above (no carbon build up though) and this time when they get tight it's for a different reason to the exhausts - tuliping!!!

with the advent of better cam designs from '03 i thought that these days would soon be gone but they aren't!!!! the new '000' and '008' cams are just as lineaweaver predicted and still causing massive tuliping on the racing engines or streetbikes with enduro gearing - revs kill!!!!!! (valves anyway!).

tuliping won't disappear until we go to dual springs but my point is that without the tuliping we could have sat here for 5 years saying "you know, its just the exhaust valve clearances that make them hard to start!" to which i think we'd have come to the tight exhaust clearance conclusion a long while ago!

the trouble with all of us is that if it takes two moves ahead of thinking we're bu...ered!

interesting Taffy,

have used 5.5 thou since I got the bike last year.

I don't do the turns method but roughly 1/5 turn give or take a gnats rod and assuming thread is all ridgy didgy, a bees rod is about 2mm long BTW.
