Valve check at cold temperature

Hi,

After putting about 40 hrs on my Fe570s I decided to check my valves. Never done that before...
It's about 35 degres F here and I'm getting about .004 on all my valves. I know that I'm out of specs. But is it due to cold temp?

Also, inside my valve cover, I noticed the oil was kind of white...is it normal?

1.6 celsius? Your intakes are about right, but it's still way too cold. Might be even less than that at room temperature.
My clearances were on the loose side on all valves. No carbon or anything abnormal on valve seats to indicate the reason. When I removed the shims I noticed that all had round dimple on the valve side.

So looks like the shims were worn down!

Might be condensation if the oil looks funny. If it is really watery, comes out like sludge and looks milky then I would be concerned.

Yes, it was near 0 celcius. Today, it will be warmer (13 celcius), so I will check it again.

Finally, after reading in some other forums and comparing with my situation, I think it's just a bit of condensation. The bike was not use since november and I started the bike 2 times this spring for a few minutes. Now that I know, I will not do this anymore.

I checked my valves at 10 degres celcius amd here are the results:

.14mm on both intakes
.13mm on both exhaust

I'm guessing that I should let those original shims in place and check the valves later this year?
The bike has 45 hours on it and never had a valve adjustment...so I should be good as is?

The FSM gives the clearances at 20 deg but, personally, I wouldn't worry too much about checking them at close to 0 deg C as the difference will be minimum IMO. The clearances are set to be correct at running temp and If you consider this will be >100 deg then a few degrees when cold will be negligable. JMO
