can any of you guys tell me "about" how much i can expect to have the valves adjusted on a 98 FC501 there is no noises but i want them checked any way the last time was in washington state by a very good friend of mine but now im here in monterey ca

not sure what you are really asking but you can find all the details of how to do it yourself here on the site and in the "doc"

read the doc and search the mech fourn for valve adjustments

If your asking cost, I can check mine and adjust in less than 1/2 hour.
Depends on what the shop rate is in your area.

You're a stud if you can do that. I don't like doing it without removing the radiator, so it takes me over an hour.

I would say an hour's labor would be fair.

thanks guys i just dont want to completely screw it up and then have to take it somewhere with out know whats wrong i think thats when they stick it too you. its funny you say to read the docs and threads i did and the main issue every one of them had was they were told to do the 1/6 1/8 turn of the screw and not use the feeler gauge im one to read the directions on mac and cheese guys

I must be slow in my old age.By the time I take the tank off, wrap a rag(s) around everything so dirt doesn't fall in,remove the rad and ck/set with a feeler gauge, refill and bleed and so on I'm sure I'm well over an hour.I tried the 1/4,1/8 turn or whatever but it wasn't accurate. As for Kelsow's overall Studliness;I couldn't say

I don't take the rad off. I use a ground down allen key to take the rad side cover off.

1+ but I must only be a studlett......................... Takes me 1 hr..........................................
But then again I am easiley distracted......... a glance at the girlish shape of da fifiddy and uh....... huh...... uhh...... huh.......... wow I got a funny feelinn uuh.... huh.... huh........huh can I just sit here for a while .....uuh..... huh....huh......huh (bevis)

Im with kelsow, takes me about 1/2 hr as well using the 1/8 turn method. I dont remove the radiator either...... cause Im a lazy aussie and always look to do the bare minimum.
works for me.

i don't remove the rad , just trim a peice of cardboard to suit the shape of the rad and you won't damage the cooling fins .

I do a full turn. that way I don't have to adjust often. When the bike starts easier I know the decomp is kicking in and toleance is getting tight.
Now thats lazy.

Rick, are you about to bash me for the pics man. im just excited that she is running and startng to look good again sorry dont hate man

Husabergler that's damn lazy - you win!
Shouldn't give ideas to those of us with leccy legs.
Coops

Figured I'd win. I have no e-start so this doubles as leg presses as I am too lazy to work out. :D We should start a thread to find out who is the laziest on this site, would be fun reading.

It shouldn't take more than 30 minutes with a cut-down allen key and the MotionPro valve adjustment tool... a "must have" by the way...

And Ford, it's not the 1/8 turn method that's not accurate... it's the man behind the tools...

It takes me a couple of days to do mine.
Remove seat & tank - 5 minutes.
Remove valve covers - 5 minutes.
Thirsty work . Must stop for a couple cans - 45 minutes. :drinking:
Loosen locknuts - 5 minutes.
Nip down to remove slack - 5 minutes.
Extra careful lining up screw slots with locknuts - 5 minutes.
All this thinking requires a break. Must stop for a few more cans - 45 minutes. :drinking:
Can't work it out but always have trouble focusing at this point.
Better to be safe than sorry - relax with a few more beers and resume next morning. :drinking:
Next day after lunch - Slacken off 1/8 turn and lock down - 5 minutes.
Replace valve covers - 5 minutes.
Replace tank and seat - 5 minutes.
That was thirsty work - glad I don't do that too often - better celebrate.
I just can't understand how you guys can do it so quick ! :?
