Valve adjustment screw replacements

Hi!

I have an old (veteran?) 350 Husa from -92 that has been converted to a 400.
The 89-95 Husa's has a valve adjustment screw that is solid, without any "elephant foot" as the -96 and newer bikes have.

When checking with the Husa-parts shops around the original 89-95 screws (part no 200 020-01) are replaced with a newer one (part no 59036062000) with elephant foot, that a sales rep said is a KTM part.

The problem is that is does not give any valve gap at all since the foot is higher than the top of the original screw.

Does anyone have any experience of this problem and can give me some further tips?

Is it ok to grind in the rockers, or is it neccessary to replace also the rockers to a newer model?

Thanks
/Tomme

Welcome Tomme,
You may try forwarding your question to Dale Lineaweaver at

If he cant help you, perhaps he can steer you in the right direction.

Thanks berger, for the welcome and tips about Dal.
I'll send him the questions and post the result here.

I have experienced the same problem out of other reasons. I ground off as much as possible from the valve stem tip and tapered the threaded hole in the rocker slightly to allow the foot to move.

Don´t know if it will do you any good, but thats how I did, and it worked.

dale has gone off foe two months but i think he'd say that going to the tappet pads would be a step forwards.

the tappeet pads are an undiscussed issue here at UHE but i'm sure that they are a source of many of our problems.

Taffy

"Tappet pads" - I´ll add it to my dictionary...

In the past I´ve had to hardface the valve tips to avoid the naked tappets to wear out the valve. I´d also say they are a mainly good thing. What´s bad, Taffy?

Thanks for the tips Dr_C and Taffy.

Grinding off the valve stems is one of the solutions i have considered, but i wasn't sure it was enough.
But you have just proved that it is, thanks.

What is really the difference betwen the KTM replacements 59036062000 and the 96- Husa screws 200 171-01, aren't they both "Elephant foot" style?

I´m not sure how the new tappets are looking with the pads removed. If the radius on the naked tappet is large enough, perhaps you could just remove the pads and run it the way you´re used to? Perhaps with hardfaced stem tips?

My problem had nothing to do with OEM valves, cylinder head or rockers. Only the valve cover and the tappets were stock items. So do not trust my experience too much! What I do know is that you don´t need more than 1,0mm from the groove for the retainers to the tip of the valve stem, to make it hold together.

Good luck!
