Using my 08 FE450 as a dual sport - bad idea??

Hi

I'm thinking of making my berg street legal and using it to dual sport. not as a daily commuter, more like 10 or so time a year (!!) of 1 day trips - mostly gravel and 2-tracks with the occasional payment to and from the truck. In the future I would like to maybe use it for a week long trip on one of the TAT sections.

Is that a bad idea, as far as the bike durability and maintenance? what do I need to do to make the bike's life and mine better? change gearing, etc? If I'm all wrong here and need to find myself a DRZ instead let me know..

I'm going to use the stock tires for starters (I don't think they'll last to long anyhow) and if I'll like it I guess the next step will be a bigger fuel tank and a softer seat.

any ideas will be much appreciated.

Thanks

Mati

I have a Husky TE610 for the longer ride stuff - ride for ages on a tank of fuel, has a rack for packing heaps of gear, has Wolfman saddle bags and only check the valves every 5000kms and oil change after big rides.

Also if the FEs are getting only 80-120kms range out of a tank, even with add-on subframe tank + safari tank, several days riding in the middle of nowhere- it aint going to cut the mustard and may leave you stranded.

For dual sport, get a cheap second bike with a strong subframe that is easy to fix as a bush mechanic without all the electronics wizardry and pack it like a mule.

Thanks fizz... I was hoping that with the 4 gal tank the bike will get more then 120 Km...

Problem is that in order to get a second bike I'll have to let go of the berg, and around Texas very few people know them and are willing to pay for them...

The husky sounds sweet... what kind of km/liters do you get out of it ?

I have been using a n 08 FE450 for dual sporting and I have been getting right at 50 MPG. I ride pretty easy on the hard roads so maybe that is why the fuel mileage is okay.

I had a 07 FE550 and an 08, both used as dualsport bikes. With the 4 gallon tank I could go 200kms easily, never found out max range though. Those bikes were great for a mix of single-track/ quad track/gravel road riding. Not too great on the hiway however, mainly due to the lightweight and lack of comforts (windshield, seat). Go ahead and us it, not a bad idea at all.
