Using a bit of oil ?

I have noticed that my FE400 02 is using a bit of oil, after topping up to the top of oil window and then using about 5 litres of fuel ( 3 hour ride) it is now about 1/4 the way up the window. I have noticed a small amount of smoke on cold start and a very small amount when I give it a rev when warm. Should I be worried yet or just keep topping it up. P.S it is not leaking or losing oil that I can see, but seems to be running at around 70:1.
Thanks Dan

Before you can tell for sure if you have a problem, you should first stop overfilling your engine with oil. Filled to the top of the glass is overfilled, and what happens is the oil is sucked through the crankcase breather and burned. Residual oil in the "airbox" will burn on start up, creating the puff of smoke you see.

Cold, fill it to the bottom of the site glass. Take off your air cleaner and make sure there is no excess oil in the top of the crankcase breather/airbox.

If you continue to burn oil, then you have issues. Visible smoke when warm = piston rings, usually.

Thanks, it seems as though I may have been panicky as is a new bike to me. I went for another ride today and did not use any oil. My engine breather hose has been disconnected from the frame and frame plugged it runs a long section of heater hose over the top of the motor and drops down behind the motor, is this a good or bad idea ?
Cheers Dan

it's a good idea. you don't want oil in with the carburettor juices now do you!

you certainly are a panicky lil fella arenchya!

put your bike, year and location in your signature if you can please!
