It's coming down to the crunch here for me getting a second dirt bike. I am want a serious woods bike, because I have serious woods, and I plan to build some Romaniacs style track, and some difficult single track.
As much as I love the 390 I still remember after dropping it a few times and having to pick it up on that steep vertical single track in Colorado that it is a heavy bike as most 4 strokes are. I am seriously leaning towards a 2 stroke and have narrowed it down to the KTM 250 ec, 250 exc, and 300 exc-w or finally a Gas Gas 250 ec.
Husaberg really screwed the dealers and owners when they released the 09 details early and it has really knocked the value of the used (and new) pre 09 models way down. I can get a brand new 450 or 550 for the same price as a used 2 stroker. Go figure, which makes it even harder to buy a used bike for the price of a new one but I still think that the light weight of the 2 stroke is the way to go for this purpose and also the GF could better handle the lighter 2 stroker.
I considered the 390 for a northern bike but with the issues of gas quality and the lead and fuel injection once again a 2 stroke is better suited.

think all are fine as woods bikes if you can find examples that are about the same condition / price its gotta come down to which will be easiest to get parts for.

i hear what your saying, i also have hankerings for a 2 stroke. Unfortunatley their simplicity and lighter frame is not reflected in their cost, i mean, £6k WTF? you can buy a car for that!
Does it have to be as large a capacity as 250+cc? the overall Scottish enduro champion ship was won on a 125cc this year, and you can still get a new 09 125 or 200 for £4299 in the UK.

Hey Trapper,

Try talking to Dave Fair at Pacific GasGas http://www.gasgaspacific.com There are some good deals to be had on used trade ins.How about an 07 250 for $4k?

He's a good guy to deal with and quite a few of my riding buddies have 250s or 300s and just love 'em. They seem to be getting more popular too.

I'll call him up! Holeshot has some great prices as well. Last years model (2008) 250 xc going for $5999 brand new, and the 2009 300 ex-w with the E start (yay) is $7499. The used 2007 300 has a lot of goodies on it for $5800 and then there's shipping...so now it's hard to decide when you can grab a new one for $5999. The 08 250 xc is only 215 pounds!!!!

I contemplated the same thing just a few months ago. I have a '07 550 that I really like but it is a bit of a beast (for me anyways) when the trails get really tight and I have to start picking the bike up and or over stuff. My want list narrowed to a Husky WR 300, a TM 300 and the Gas Gas EC300.

I called Dave Fair (Gas Gas) and Dan Barker (TM) as they are both fairly close to me to see what they have. I was about to call Scott at Ross Rocher re: the WR when I spotted a 2008 Gas Gas EC300 for sale on the GasGas forum that I could not pass up. It is a terrific bike for Vancouver Island trails. Still keeping the berg as it is an ideal bike for me when I go riding in the interior of BC.

I met Dave Fair for the first time on the trail a couple of weeks ago riding a trials bike with at least 10 other riders. Seems like a great guy. Spotted lots of GasGas bikes on the trail that day.

There is a near new 2008 EC300 for sale on usedvictoria.com. Supposedly only been through one rear tire.

Good luck!

Your buddy Tom could probably hook you up with any GasGas you needed. You should have taken a ride on one of his in CO.
If you come down here this winter I am sure he will have a few demo's to ride.

If you are looking into gassers. Make sure you check out the 300. It has a VERY loyal following. I now quite a few people that would never give them up. Their owners may even be more fanatical than us.

Not sure if Gas Gas is allowed in from the USA. It would have to have a 17 digit alphanumeric VIN. I was never offered a ride on the Gas Gas that Tom had even if I was craving one. I need to get a bike by Christmas- or I will be force to do family stuff by the Christmas tree. If I have a bike than the family can try and follow me. Hardy har har. My Passport is an issue now so you gotta come up and visit me Berger...so which bike u want to ride?

The purpose of bringing the GasGas's to CO was for others to demo them. It just didnt turn out that way because Tom blew himself up on the first day. He is the GasGas distributor for AZ,NM,Utah and CO.
Give him a ring, he may be able to answer you import questions.

Hmmm...which bike to ride???? I'll take the GasGas :D

Same reasons as Maddtrapper I bought a Husqvarna wr250 05 2s last weekend. Shocked as to how different it was given my fe501 02 was my first bike.

Not really tested it properly yet but 1st impressions on the positive - light, nimble, easy to kick start, fast through the gears, really takes you in & out of corners - bounces over boggy ground.

Minus side - peaky - not like the bergs constant torque - wouldn't like to trail it - ie only 5 gears & revvs like mad at about 50mph. Much prefer the sound & marque of the berg.

Think I'll keep the berg for sm & green lane trail day's out & the husy for competitions.

I read my posts seems like I am slagging Husaberg a bit. There's a 390 coming into the garage in the next 12 months for sure, make no mistake it's the most impressive bike riding wise I have been on. But in the short term since money doesn't grow on trees and the 2 strokes are going for half the price...makes sence to me. She can beat the 2 stroke to bits learning how to drive and then graduate to the 390 when the times right (or I win the lottery)

I forgot to mention while chatting on the phone with the guy who has the used 300 turns out he rides with Shane Cuthberson and also turns out hes a pilot, who just so happened to have been training at the same flight school as me when I was finishing my training 10 years ago...we live on other sides of the country...it's a small world after all...it's a small small world!

you hit the nail on the head mud400. i have an 06 gg ec300 and love it all.
and if by fanatical you mean minimal required prepping[ which maximizes drinking] and helping a friend work on his 4stroke, then yes to the question you never asked.

tuts

Unfortunatley their simplicity and lighter frame is not reflected in their cost, .

keep in mind the future cost savings around rebuild time also. both parts & labor.
also a simplicity & lighter frame might be a benefit which is hard to put a price on.
