Use of battery trickle charger/conditioner

Hi Guys, some advice/peace of mind please.

I have recently connected an Oximiser (battery conditioner) directly to the batt on my 08' FE450... and then on getting aquainted with the owners manual it advises on page 45 "To avoid damage to the onboard eletronic system, always disconnect the minus pole before you charge the battery"

My other bikes have had an ignition switch unlike the FE, which I presume would have possibly isolated electronics when off. Now I am not sure if I risk any electronic damage or reduced life when connecting the Oximiser directly to an un isolated battery, this even if current is very low.

Thanks

i use an optimate 4 on my 06. its almost permenantly connected when the bikes parked and i've never had any problems

From what I have been reading, if you connect a battery charger to the EFI bikes, the fuel pump continually cycles.

Hi , i dunno about EFI bikes but i run a battery conditioner continously i was advised after i forked out aus $220 for a new battery for my 04 FE550 that a battery conditioner would extend the life of the battery and so far no problems battery is cool and bike starts every time........colin

My Optimate brand charger, the good one that cycles and tests the battery triggers the fuel pump. My cheap Battery Tender brand will not. So...I use the Battery tender on the 09 and the Optimate on the 06.

I've had my FE on a trickle charger for the better part of two years. The bike never sits without the charger hooked up (anything to avoid the contortions you have to go through to remove and replace the battery!) Never a problem. In fact, it has sat with the charger on all winter (4 months).

Many thanks, I guess the proof is in the pudding....if you guys are running similar over extended periods then electronics must surely be fine with it.

Bike is an conventional engine 08' not new FI 09 model so no concern about fuel pump. Just a thought but possibly for those who are charging new FI 09's, its possible to put an isolator in the earth strap, something like the screw in type for boats....then just make sure it doesnt come adrift while riding...

I use the Battery tender on my 05 occasionally just to keep it up to full charge.
Once a week or so to top the charge off.

While on the Battery subject I would like to share what happened to me today.
I'm working on this Komatsu PC300 hydraulic excavator at work. Cutting out
some bent frame, welding in new pieces and welding on brackets to pull dents with
a chain attached to a backhoe.
Anyway, this machine needs new batteries, so in the meantime we are hooking up a
24 volt battery cart to the two 24 volt batteries to move it around.
So around 2 o'clock today I hook it up for a jump start. Positive to the Positive and
negative to a ground bolt.
It's not starting and I'm going back and forth fiddling with it on the terminals.
Positive terminal is loose. I tighten it, re-attach cable.
It's sparking a little and then KABOOOM !!!
This 24 volt battery blows up in my face !! Acid all over my face and a defining
sound that had my ears ringing.
I yell out, jump down and grab the hose to douse my head and eyes.
I can't open my eyes yet. They're burning so I put more water in there
and rush to the bathroom to throw more water in my face.
I got it off with no lasting signs of burning. I am so glad the water was within
10 feet of the incident.
Some workmates and the neighboring mechanic came rushing over from 100
yards away to see if I was OK.
I am, but it was quite an experiance.
This old battery probably had a gas leak and the spark set it off.
It blew a piece the size of your opened hand off the top and a small
hole in my left knuckle.

Gooch unplug the 4 pin connector under the seat, words from husaberg.

When the 09's hit the foor I had the bikes on a battery tender brand, then berg came
out with one so i purchased one so when the tender brand said it was at full i pluged
the berg unit on to see if the same reading would come up. Well the berg unit charged
for 4 1/2 hours before going to storage, also lets you no if a bad cell exists as well
as battery startability, battery open voltage& alternator output!

How much does the Husaberg charger sell for?

Thanks for sharing your battery experience with us. Here's to your good fortune (that the accident was not worse than it was) and a speedy knuckle recovery!

It seems generally agreed that no damage will come as a result of using a battery conditioner especially now that I see that Husaberg have their own type available. I presume there are no special warnings for use with this item, such as full battery disconnection.

Use of a normal full battery charger with battery connected and in the bike is questionable/not advised.

New shape '09 models need fuel pump to be isolated to ensure correct trickle charging and FI pump would be easily isolated by disconecting at the FI pump electrical connector.

Pollo, you are a very lucky man! 'Glad you are OK. I worked on earthmoving equip myself in the past, had batteries split open and heard about explosions but never experienced a blow up. You are so so lucky you had water close by as makes me think when out in the field for short visit (machine hard starting!) 'did not even carry a drink bottle! Someone is looking after you for sure and a lesson for us all regarding batteries.

On similar subject, new Lithium types offer great power and see more guys using them on bikes but note they can be very explosive if short circuit or incorrectly charged/ misused. Here they quickly overheat, burst into flames and will take out what ever is around them.

Cheers, Bundubasher

Enough to frighten me off. Its a rip off.

Thank you for the consideration friends.
The knuckle isn't bad. I think a little plastic shrapnel.
No signs of acid burn thankfully because I got it off quick
with water.

I would like to add my 2 cents. I have a 2009 Fe 450, I attached leads to the battery so i would not have to pull it outy to charge it (with a trickle charger). To solve the problem of the fuel pump why not remove the fuses? I did this because i forgot how to unplug the fuel pump. After i did that i plug the charger in again and hear a click, I think i have sourced it to the ignition coil in between the gas tank in front. I don't think it is a big deal i just want your opinion.

P.S. my bike is US spec and has SICASS Racing wiring harness for turn signal, horn, key, so not stock

Here is my thoughts on these trickle type battery chargers.
I don't like them at all.
I have seen several different bikes have starting problems.
its like they don't add a deep charge but only add a surface charge.
So it cranks great for the first few times then dies.
Again this is my first hand experience.
I think that if the battery gets low, disconnect it and charge it with a non trickle type.
Just my thoughts.
Sorry for the capital letters and the "k", I'm doing this fr
om my phone
