Use E-start while rolling?

A mate of mine had a tooth broken of the kickstart gear. While he couldn't find the tooth, he just rode it untill it got in between the balancer gears, thus ruining the engine. After a costly repair it now runs again. He was told that if the engine stalls while moving you shouldn't start it with the e-start, because a tooth can break whilst all the gears are rotating. Does this make any sense? In other words, is e-starting while rolling with a shut down engine potentially dangerous for the enigne?

arjen he should check the breakaway tourque value of the torque limiter,

should break away at 7 to 15 ft lbs

There was a warranty with that item!

Good point there. I believe the repair bill has not been payed yet....

never try and restart an engine while it's stalling. you can get away with it some of the time but you won't forever. a tooth will definately break and that isn't a husey thing it's a BMW to Yugo thing.

as for him riding around with a tooth missing - well he brought it all on really didn't he....

You're absolutely right. Funny thing is the dealer advised to ride on because according to him it wouldn't do any damage...... That's why the bill isn't payed yet. Discussion is still going on. I wouldn't ride on personally. I bought a replacement engine for another bike, a KTM 640. When i found alumimium grindings in the oil I decided to remove the clutch cover. Then i found a left over piece of an oilpump gear made of plastic (it was all grinded up, but I recognised a tooth) I found pieces in between the bearing gages, balancer etc. Sot it really got in between the gears..... Luckily it was plastic so it didn't do much damage exept get in between the clutch and the cover and do some grinding. Still puzzles me if it was there because of a privious repair or from new.....
