US certified safety

Just bought a 2005 fs650 dmv inspector is asking about a US certified safety sticker before I can title and tag it or I need a letter from manufacture stating it meets safety standards. How can I get a letter or a sticker?

That's a pretty interesting question. Never been to the US but probably I'd look into contactin a veteran US dealer? MotoXotica is often mentioned? Not sure who's out there. Anyone local?

I have an fs650e, 2005, and there is a sticker at the steering stem toward the right side stating that " this vehicle was manufactured to be compliant with the motor vehicle act of 1989". Hope this helps. These bikes were made as legal road going machines. Some people at dmv simply don't like the way they look. Go online and research the laws of your state. Once educated, educate the dmv inspector. If you can't get satisfaction with the lane personnel, go over their head and speak with their boss. Worked for me. Today, in fact!

This is correct for sure. All manufactures must meet a quality standard and regulation to sell their product legal for use upon a highway. It is a federal regulation. If it don't have the certification then it can not legally be used upon a highway. I know in Canada we can get the bikes plated and on the street quite easy, but if something ever happened and the accident was investigated and the vehicle was not compliant, big problems. Everything from frame to wheels must be certified safe and meet the standard, I think North America uses the same standard as I know cars and trucks have the same standard for both USA and Canada now.
