question...i have the old 01fe650 .thinking about getting the rear shock rebuilt/re valved/serviced etc.this thing has no hs adjustment.would it be worth spending any money on this old shock or should i toss it and upgrade.anyone had the new and the old to compare? what are your thoughts?..weed..

I have an 08 shock converted to schrader valve with about 100 hours on it, 10 hours on new oil and a light shim shuffle, the top heim joint is in my ohlins and there are plenty of scratches on it no spring..

also have an 06 shock with top and bottom heims but its done 150hrs and got a bit hot I guess about $100 each ?

you get a nicer needle in the 08, better stacks and pistons in both and HS comp adjusters ..... Lew will know if its worth it. MHO of WP shocks is ....well ... . not much...

Gents, be carefull of the eye to eye dimension of each shock. I tried to swap an 04 into an 06 and found the shock length to be different. I did not realize there was a chassis change, but somewhere there was.

you can pick up an '05 or so shoc as cheap as chips. definately upgrade, have it rebuilt a well while it's out and upgrade to '08 specs which i have.

FWIW

I would keep the old shock and convert it to a 1 1/2 piston setup like husky510 did, there is a link in the shock tuning for enduros or in that thread I did on the TTX shock.

eye to eye I sees ya its about 410mm on the 2 that I have

I prefer working on shocks to forks, there is only 1 damper unit and its held in with 2 bolts. the first oil fill and bleed is interesting but its not hard.

hes using a terry hay telescoping needle I don't know how that would go without one, you could make your own needle with a hole though the middle.

as an alternative to a TTX i considered buying a cr500 swingarm, shock and link from ebay and making it fit...... arguably would result in better performance from a cheaper initial outlay.

thanks for your opinions lads.i'll just have a little read & a little think.
just starting to get my brain around all fork sheit, now i'm going to do this.
only one way to learn though..hey.
this will bring on a bit more grey hair,no doubt, but i'm over look'en pretty anyway.
my deed is done so i don't have to impress anyone anymore anyway.
i'll keep in touch bushy if decide to buy your old one.
thanks ..weed..

fryguy is right, eye to eye the 01 shocky is 403mm.in bushys pm he thinks 1mm shock distance is equal to slightly less than 3mm raising of rear end(approx).7 x 3=21mm higher.
should be able to make it work.
what about top & bottom bolt diameters 12mm top/10mm bottom?
sorta really didn't want it higher than it already is.
if a 6mm spacer goes inside of the shock to make it shorter & loose the same in shaft travel, does that mean the shocky will bottom out before wheel is fully bottomed out?
probably not hey, its only 20mm wheel travel.might just cut the bump rubber back about 6mm as well.
what cha recon?
..weed..

bolts 10mm bottom and 12 top

sorry weed Im a goose the TTX was 409 or 410mm eye to eye, the 2 WPs are about 403. hey its only 1.7% out bit closer than 25% in the BF :)

max shaft travel 102mm

if you want it let me know which oil you would like in it and Ill get it sorted and sent express post on tuesday

ok,next, talking springs now, whats everyones thoughts, who's got what.
straight rate or progressive.the owners doc leaves it up for you to decide.i read that thing on terry hay, saying progressive springs are too progressive & straight rate lack bottoming resistance.
weight about 90kg,think that's a bit over 200lb
more advise please
..weed..

weed

the shocks are actualy shimmed for progressive up to about '05 I THINK. after that they were shimmed for a straight rate. might be in the doc under chaper one.

anyway, we weigh the same and i have thee heaviest progressive in there. 85/111 and it's magic. would you believe i was trying to get one up from there that was made by a shock co in the states but they seem to have stopped making them now.

a 92 or 94 straight would be a conservative guesstimate.

try and put your bike in your signature mate.

so if yours is the late model shocky, did you make a shim adjustment for the progressive spring.would that be more hs rebound & less comp?
..weed..

I never really got the WPs figured out, there are 2 pistons one suposedly works deeper in the stroke but it really works all the time for High speed hits thats part of the reason WP keeps incraesing the size of the bleed ports in the colllar between the 2 pistons. trail tricks does the same and its the reason that 1 1/2 piston shocks are nice.

so for a progressive you'd supposedly want a stiffer rebound stack on the 2cnd piston (the one that works deeper into the stroke) and or a stiffer high speed rebound on both pistons.

i think the shims that are in the shocky will be reasonably good for 90 Kg and a stiff spring

we'll find out if the 08 is really better than an 01 I guess

mine's a 2002 weed. i have never hd the rear shock bu i've had it tuned years ago by the t*****s at K-Tech in coalville, leicestershire. the %&*nkers did my forks and all they did was put the '03 KTM shim stack in which was a waste.

as for the back shock, well all that i can say is that you want maximum HSCD and then some. that's the big nut around the small screw.

i've ridden a katoom B2B with the husey and the ktm was awful on the rear (2002 525exc) and i would put 90% of that down to the spring. i love my progressive but having said that: WP is a POS.

thanks lads for your advise again,i can see this is going to take me years to work out,but that doesn't matter,i'll just keep on tinkering.i could just send it to frank pons or terry hay like most NORMAL people would, but what the heck, i'm starting to get the suspension bug.half the fun is working it out for myself anyway.
at least i shouldn't miss out on a ride if i have 2 shocks,i can have 1 shock in bits & be testing the other.

Normal people don't ride bergs ? :)

glad its going to a good home to be tinkered with and taken apart till it works ! its going to shocky heaven

still got this other 06 shocky might give it a cleanup and a service I can even test the bloody thing in my bike EEK :) if anyones looking for a second shock let me know
