Updating wiring and speedo on a 03' Fe400

Hello all, I'm new to this site and husabergs, so sorry in advance if I do something wrong. (The signature thing is saying I've exceeded the max word limit of 0)

Just bought a 2003 Fe400 supermoto and it's pretty different from what I'm used to (85' Yamaha XT350). I've been looking to update it with a trailtech speedo/dash and to update the wiring harness to allow turn signals and the trailtech speedo, but that's where it gets a bit difficult. I guess they don't make many parts for the older bergs.

I'm curious as to how I can put on the trailtech and turn signals without completely tearing apart the wiring harness. I figured I could get a tusk dual sport lighting kit (or something like it) for a newer Fe390 or something and same for the trailtech and instead of splicing a ton of wires, I could just do a few going to the stator, since the new wiring harness and plugs for the trailtech should be compatible?

Anybody have any experience with adapting turn signals and a trailtech to an older berg? Is there an 'easy way'? Any help would be great!

Thanks

afaik, there should be a lot of generic sm kits out there, but it's true, not much specifically made for that bike.
better info could be had if one of those lazy sm riders would answer your thread.
getting power to your accessories isn't all that difficult, but it will require you to know what the requirements are of what you're installing .

I haven't tried to install a Trailtech but a turn signal is a turn signal...
Regarding the age of your bike I'd be surprised if you could find any wiring harnesses that are compatible.
(you do have the full blown wiring harness? Just so you don't have the FC/FX/FSc wiring harness without lights and turn signals...)
Sooooo I guess I'm telling you to split some wires or build your own wiring harness.

But what do I know? I'm just a lazy *** SM wannabe.

I haven't really torn into the bike too much yet because of the poor weather, but it does have a headlight with hi/low, horn and starter button... There is a taillight, but there doesn't seem to be any wires coming from any of the braking components (front or back) and it doesn't come on when the bike is running, so I'm a bit confused about that... Is there supposed to be a banjo-bolt switch or something?

I'm pretty much a beginner as far as electrical work goes, so I'm just figuring things out as I go along

Are there any differences between the electrical outputs of the modern Husa's vs. the older ones? Wondering if the old alternator has enough juice to power one of the newer husa's harnesses with all the lights and stuff. The manual says mine is 12V 70+70W

I'm alright with splitting a few wires here and there, but I don't want to go too far into it.. I figured that If I buy a newer harness, with all the plugs and sockets for the turn signals, speedo, ect, but just splice the connection between the new harness and the old alternator and the ignition. That way, I could get the newer accessories like turn signals and the trailtech and just plug into the new harness and go.

I'll probably start with the new harness, figure that out, then go form there.

Thanks a bunch so far for your advice.

A harness from a newer model might give you the connection points and access to newer gadgets to connect to it but it's built for another frame so I think you will run in to trouble adapting the new harness to your old frame.

I took a sneek peek at the wiring diagram for -03 and you should have all the connections you've been asking for.
Now you just have to find them.

Wondering if the old alternator has enough juice
prolly the only good thing about the SEM. tie the two yellows together.

I figured that If I buy a newer harness, with all the plugs and sockets for the turn signals, speedo, ect, but just splice the connection between the new harness and the old alternator and the ignition.
you figured wrong. ten times more work than modifying the one u have, and connector compatibility is a crapshoot.

it does have a headlight with hi/low, horn and starter button...
the one i had was terrible. always had to take it apart and clean contacts.

Is there supposed to be a banjo-bolt switch or something
doesn't come with one, but you can buy them (make sure of the threads), and tie it into taillight power.

Alright, thanks guys. I'll take your advice and see what I can do. I'll try and post pics of the finished product if all goes well!

cheers
