Unusual breakdown

So I finished work early on a fine Saturday afternoon and decided to take my FS650 for a quick spin through the national park. Halfway there it started jerking wierdly so I pulled up(immediately) to see what the problem was. Turns out that the sprocket was being held in place by just 1 out of the 6 bolts!! And the last of these was hitting the inside of the swingarm on every rotation. WTF!!! So I got the bike home on the back of a truck and to add to the injury, as I was pushing it the short distance down my driveway the sprocket carrier gives way and cracks. LOVELY!! Now I had to pick up the rear end to wheel it, glad it only weighs 115kilos and not the 200 of my aprilia. I don't know how I could have missed something so obvious. I looked at the photos I took of my bike from 3 weeks ago and 5 of the 6 bolts holding the sprocket in place are obviuosly present. The 6th is either hiding behind the swingarn or has already jumped ship. The only thing I can think of that may have caused this problem is when the shop replaced my rear tyre. Do they need to remove the sprocket?? Maybe it wasn't torqued correctly. I could understand losing 1 or 2 but 5!!!! I'm either the unluckiest or luckiest bloke (still?) alive depending which way you look at it. May have lost alot of bolts but I was just taking off from the lights when the problem made itself evident. Imagine what may have happened had I been travelling at 130k's through a corner when the sprocket carrier gave way. A couple of band-aids might have been on order!! Lesson I learnt is to check every damn bolt before my next ride.

when one loosens it loosens the others. the dealer won't have touched your sprocket. unlucky bud. is the hub finisged because the bolt holes will also now be elongated so you have a lot of work/money to spend?

Those sprocket screws are Loctited with #243 and torqued to 35 Nm. I have NEVER had them loosen between sprocket changes on my dirt Husabergs..

I would suspect someone may have replaced the sprocket at some time and forgot to Loctite and torque the screws, or the shop that replaced the tire may have fiddled with the sprocket; even though its not necessary, as Taffy said, to remove the sprocket to replace the tire.

But then, if your hub is not cushioned, running it on pavement might cause them to loosen. Whose to know?

Sorry,

Joe

happened to my buddies ktm 525, one bolt left, a huge gouge in the swing arm WAY out in nthe middle of no where...
