Underseat (up to 2008) fuel tank - fuel line routing

I’ve got a question for those fellow Berg owners of this period who are have the underseat aux fuel tank, as I have on my 2008 FE550.

While I am glad to have the almost 3L of extra fuel. The problem I’m facing is hose layout. I find the route from the tap to how I’ve plumbed into the fuel inlet not high enough to adequately feed fuel. It lacks head pressure to push fuel all the way from the right, down by the shock and then over to the left.

Anyone have pics of a fuel line layout that’s worked well for them?

if I recall it was fuel from right tap into transfer of extra tank, fuel tap out to a 2 into 1 with the left tap. the extra tank breather went all the way up the frame to the headstock and around the bars once.

at the gas station, I can't recall but I think I loosened the extra tank cap and put it in the normal tank and let the air hiss/vent out. as the top tank gets 3/4 full stop fuelling. then as the extra tank gets very full, close the cap at the last moment and lock in the fuel. then fill the normal tank the last bit.

PS; it's 2 litres. nearly 3 pints.

Hi Taffy. Sorry. Been slammed with work and haven’t touched the bike since posting.

I think I follow. I did a 3way T at the carb that tied all three outlets before going into the carb inlet. That allows me to isolate the rear. I have a breather going from the aux cap out to the bars as well.

Your approach intrigues me, though. Let me ponder further.

Hi Taff,

I had another look at this, and in fact my routing schema follows yours, at least in generalities. Where I suspect the difference might be, is how the two taps on each of the two lobes of the main tank (larger 16L Clarke in my case, but I believe the OEM had two lobes each with a tap) connect around the carb.

I routed my line over the carb air inlet boot into the engine, looking to locate the fuel hose as far from the exhaust as possible. But I think that's my issue - it may be too high for any meaningful pressure from the reserve to force the fuel over and into the fuel inlet fitting on the carb.

If you don't mind confirming if you route under or over that boot, that'd be great - and I'll consider the issue settled.

well I wouldn't go over and if you aren't happy with under then you need to find a 'third way'. I sell T-pieces and Y-pieces, also there's the 2004 preformed U-piece. what they did was to make the U go up. few people realise it but it points forwards out the carb, does a U over itslef and faces the tailpipe. THEN it splits into 2 at a T piece. that way it hugs the carb at the heat and then it is safe.

Hi Taff, big thanks!

Yup, that makes sense to do the splitter fittings aft of the carb, over the batt, ahead of the aft tank, where there's more room and you're further away from the pipe, at a point where the pipe is also cooler than up by the cylinder.

I've got a bunch of T fittings - I'll see if I can rig something more to my liking that way. The pre-curved piece intrigues me - I'm guessing that's this one:

The Y fitting would likely be nicer than my T fitting, too.

If weren't that I'd pay more in shipping then the part is worth, I'd be all over it, Taff. If I can't make my T fittings work, I’ll order something up.

Would 3d printing these work? I don't know much about that technology, but I understand there is a variety of types of plastic that can be printed from. Curious if anybody has an aux tank that we can use for dimensions. I've also looked into having one custom made out of aluminum.
