Under seat fuel tank???

I am looking at adding a fuel cell under the seat of my '02 FC550/6. Has anyone done this on their bike, and if so is there any info that you can give me that will make the install easier or persuade my decision on even getting one? I am currently getting involved in some hare scramble races in the newly formed AMRA (Arizona Motorcycle Riders Assoc) and don't know if my bike will be able to finish a 60 mile course (3x 20mile) under racing conditions. Any info or help would be greatly appreciated.

Since the race series is still in its kick off state I have only had the chance to go on one group fun ride in the northern Arizona to meet some of the joining members. I already have one individual who thinks racing the Berg in the series is a joke. He is very dissatisfied in my choice of bikes..... maybe just intimidated. Anyway, first race isn't until Nov 6th so I have several months to get my steed in top condition for the kick off. Hopefully I can put the Berg on display and make a good running in one of the divisions.

I just picked up the factory under the seat tank. You will have to come by and check it out. I havent installed it yet (dont know which bike to put it on yet). It only holds 3/4 of a gallon, I think it's just enough to make sure you will get through a 60 mile loop.
Who was givin you grief about the Berg?? Our numbers are beginning to multiply. Soon all will know the Force.

Hello Berger-

I would like to come by and check out the tank. How much is one going for? The ride up at camp wood was nice, weather was excellent, 73 durring the day and high 40's low 50's at night. The directions were bad though, we arrived an hour late from the departure time and ended up riding later after the others (cactus sampler{Chris}and phil611(Phil}) came back from their ride. Chris lost a foot peg on a rock which ended his riding for the day. Chris is the one who was asking why anyone in their right mind would by the Berg..... Says he can beat my bike on the CR500 which I humbly let him know that I have yet to see the rear end of a CR500 while riding! Guess i'll just have to throw a few baby head sized boulders at a few people to get some respect around here.... I did not know that you aquired another Berg, what did you get????

I picked up Kevin and Kalitudes 01 FX470e. I have been tinkering with it for about 6 months. I think it's ready to roost :firestarter: . I have ridden with Phil a few times, he is cool and fast for another old guy. I havn't roosted.... er I mean riden with cactus sampler yet  . I'll PM you my number.

i would have thought it was more important to ask what can you get out of a tank of petrol lads? surely?

why the expense and hassle if you don't need it and if it goes wrong?

i have one here which i've never fitted.

the standard tank on a husey (same tank for all post 2001 models) sees me do a straight two hours and have about 1/2 litre left. i have to have it full to the brim. this is MX style work or enduros. so can you go 2-hours?

remember there is infact no reserve on a husey.

this should help you

Taffy,

The longest run I have had my bike on was 64 miles (103km). This was a medium paced ride on jeep trails to the top of a mountain 32 miles (51.5km) one way. I rode the bike mainly in third gear sometimes fourth and fifth where the roads stretched themselves but mostly bending roads with lots of corners and few straight runs. Ride was a steady uphill grade to the top and lots of coasting coming down. When I got back I had about half a gallon (1.9 ltr.) which I thought was kind of low for the undemanding ride I had gone on.

So Taffy, I guess I am wondering if two hours of poking around in third sight seeing is going to consume as much, slightly less, or significantly less than 2 hours of intense single track riding?

Do you or anyone else have an idea of fuel consumtion rates based on different types of riding styles?

Taffy,

Easy to make the fuel taps have a reserve - they are already 3 position (OFF-ON-RES). Pull both fuel taps off (they're the same), unscrew the filter and you'll see the two holes for ON & Reserve are at the same height (an extension needs to be inserted in the ON hole). Go to a model aeroplane store and get some aluminium tube used for ailerons - it's the right outside diameter for the hole. I cut it to length so that the filter captures it in the ON hole when screwed on (so it can't fall out). Use a round file to scallop an entry for the fuel in the aluminium tube near the top. Put it all together and then you'll have a reserve work ing for just a few dollars.

i thought i was the only one lol my 99 fe600 chews through the juice when my speedo worked i was getting about 80km out a tank and i have found that high speed riding tends to use alot more fuel than trail riding i have run out of fuel after 36 km on one run holding it flat for a bout 2 stretches of about 5 km each going very fast tho 180kph + wot but i usually try to get fuel by about 60km to play it safe

cheers doug

Justin_yz426,

Are you comparing my beloved, charished, and most sacred sweedish deisel to that of a yamaha!!!

Ogden..... 30 lashes with the blood stripes of your mighty hammer!!

Had to be done.....lol......... I couldn't resist.

Justin, on a more serious note: I am trying to gather other riders experiences with fuel consumption rates durring different types of riding and your post was just that... thank you!

PS. Do you own a Husaberg or have plans to buy one???

ROFL, your welcome. I want to get a fe650e. But I dont know if it will hold up to the abuse I dish out. For instance I dont have the money or time to really take care of such a fine pieace of machinery. But I want to test drive one and make a comparison. After that i'll let you know. But I always wanted one.

BTW-you guy's are cool. You dont did'nt blow me off like a lot of other forms.

I get very close to 65 miles out of a tank riding single track mixed with the sand washes at the Bartlett Dam area in Cave Creek as well as Four peaks and Rolls OHV. When I ride at Desert Wells, which is race pace 4th and 5th gear WOT through the washes and quad trails zig zagging back and forth ( on the gas off the gas on again) I get less than 60 (closer to 50) miles to a tank.

The bike will get closer to 70 miles if it's 3rd or 4th mild riding.

You will either need to pit or add a tank.

Ken,

Where did you get the aux tank?

How much $ for it?

I got mine off the classified's here on the site. I paid $175 but I have no idea what they retail for, maybe more maybe less.
