Hi Guys,

I past my test last week :) so happy. Managed to get out on some green lanes near home and up to a old quarry thats been used for years by trialers and the like. Its the first time id got the bike up to any speed and i found that it wasn't running right. Ill try and describe it.

Doing around 30-40mph in 3rd/4th. It felt like the bike was stuttering as if power was cut or an electrical issue so the bike was jolting me back and forth. the exhaust was also popping quite a bit.

After about an hours driving this got worse. To the point where it bogged down and i couldn't accelerate unless i dropped gears. I also notice i had to find a 'sweet spot' on the throttle as to much throttle made the power drop and it bogged down. after a few hours it really bogged down and was difficult to ride home.

Its worth noting that my bike also has an issue when warm that it stalls all the time when idling. I have changed the spark plug boot as someone on here suggested. I have also ordered a new spark plug which should arrive in a day or too. Just wondered if anyone could confirm its likely the plug or something else? the plugs electrode looks fine

Ive attached pictures on the plug I've taken out which is really corroded and a cheeky on of the local disused quarry.

Congrats on the license!!!

- Could it be the fuel pump? An injector that needs cleaning?

Thanks.

I have no idea. it just seems odd it gets worse when hot.

I figured it must be ignition related and because i dont know when it was last serviced id start with the plug/lead.

I guess i best change the fuel filter too.

When the pump is going bad, then afaik it gets worse with heat. Probably as internal components expand.

Not 100% sure!, but I wouldn't exclude the possibility yet!

Thanks Tourist.

Also when warm and it stalls... usually on the trails when moving slow in 2nd. i can make it stall just buy giving it some gentle throttle. I have to start again and rev to bring revs up to stop it repeatedly stalling. Not sure if that could be injector related.

Out of interest does the 09 FE450 have a fuel filter? can i put an inline one in?

Right, Ive changed the plug and its made no difference.

The bike is now the same cold as warm. Stalls all the time, won't rev properly. too much throttle kills it. fuel detonation in exhaust (pops bangs)

Will upload a video in a bit.

Next step?

Is your bike new to you or was it running good before?

Its new to me. Ive done maybe 6 hours in my back yard before it started stalling when warm but I've never had it up to speed until recently passing my test.

I did about 20 miles green laning with some road in-between so had the opportunity to get up to some speed.

Its after this the bike has got worse. The video is of a cold start.

A mechanic friend has suggested an induction air leak as the popping exhaust is classic of that. However so is bad fuel pump, bad electrics and bad injector.

I guess I'm going to have to strip tank of and test one by one to eliminate.

Ok I stripped off fule tank and disconnected the fule line and put it in a Jerry can. I removed the HT lead from the plug and cranked the engine. The pumped primed and continued to pump a fair amount of fuel into my can.

So o don't think it's that.

I checked and cleaned the spade connector to the coil. I checked all hose lines for blockage. I tightened all jubilee clips on hoses. Hooked up the tank and tried again.

Same issue as video. :-(

I removed the Throttle body. Covered all holes with rubber gloves and popped out the injector. It looks ok... I've cleaned it up a bit in some petrol and read the guide online about connecting it to a 9v battery and spraying compressed air through.

What else should I check or do with it?

FWIW,

Fuel pumps for injection run a little different. You can have a fuel pump working and pumping volume but very low pressure, The eye will not tell you this. You need to ensure that the pump is making pressure and not just volume as pressure is required for injectors and volume for carbs.

Pressure gauge is only correct way to ensure, or hook up fuel line to injector and crank to check pattern of spray.

I did notice while removing, replacing, removing that the lines were pressurised as removing the sprayed fule everywhere. Sure it's no gauge.

When looking at parts for the injector i noticed this. Part 26 is missing on mine

that is OK - that part is considered not so great to have anyway as it tends to clog up

afaik the best filtration solution is to have a filter in the quick-disconnect

not to sound too butt-kissy but jon andersson has made some really solid posts on the injectors and filters here, def worth a search and read

I agree with the fuel pressure issues, my bike has the exact same problem.

There was plenty of fuel pumping through the fuel lines, I cleaned the injector, checked all wiring and efi components and still no good.

It turned out to be a very small split in the fuel line inside the tank, lol at yours very carefully for possible leaks and if damaged replace it with some quality submersible fuel line, don't just use anything because it will fail.

Cheers and good luck!

Thanks all. I've brought the injector into work today so that I can clean it. I'll re assemble tonight and try again. If not then I'll fit the new pump I've ordered. That way I've done everything and only thing left can be valves/timing or something

I was told how clean the injector put a fuel line on the out part of the injector. I put one on both sides (it's in a U shape)of the injector filled both with carb cleaner let sit for 2 hours only because more is better. then (hose is now straight)hook 9v to injector on,off,on,off,on,off as I blow with my breath into the out part of injector. When I think it's clean I put injector on halfway so I can check it on some cardboard for spray if it doesn't look good it's not clean. Start over. DON'T GET CARB CLEANER IN YOUR MOUTH OR EYES!!!!! KTM sales a kit that puts an inline filter at tank quick connect EZ to keep clean (part 26)see pic/post #12 One last thing check the injector to see if it works electrically for Me I could hear it working. If it doesn't work then why clean it?

Great news. It was the injector. Bike now runs sweet. I had fun and learnt something about my bike and bikes in general.

I took the injector and powered it with a 9v (you can here it clicking) battery and some wire. I blew compressed air back up the injector.

On my way home I picked up some carb cleaner and left it soaking in it over night. Put it back together to day and is sweet. Thanks everyone for the help and advice. Great forum!

When I do my oil changes I blow air through the injector to keep it clean. It's a noticeable difference already after 15 hours.
