Twisted front end

Hi all, I have been having a blast riding my 02 FX470 that was rebuilt this last winter. I have only one issue. After a high speed crash, the bike has picked up a push in the corners, and a little unstable at times. After looking through the owners docs( very nice Taffy) I read where the 02s were prone to a twist in the front end, but does not go into where or how to get it out. Any sugestions? Also bars are straight and wheel appears straight.

Mine did this also, after a spill my tubes were twisted and i had to loosen them and straighten them out. but it still felt like it had a push on the right side and was unsatble at times. after talking with some friends they suggested i try this method

make sure that the fork tubes are lined up straight in the triple clamps

loosen the four bolts (two on each side) that tighten the forks (clamp) on the axle

rapidly,Push as hard as you can to compress the forks and let them rebound a few times. this should take out any twist/binding that might have occured at the axle.

tighten the bolts and check for any symptoms if you still have symptoms you might have a bent axle or bearing that is binding

however, there are many people here who know more than I.....

With the bike on a stand, visually sight across both fork tubes from the side to make sure that they are parallel. If not, either the triple clamps have twisted or the tubes are bent. If the triple clamps have twisted, loosen triple clamp bolts and right side front axle pinch bolts and straighten.

i would agree that my answers are short in the owners doc. something is being done now to 'flesh them out'.

i would do this;
loosen as said and even check the headrace bearings while you're there
tighten TC bolts after giving them a shake etc
tighten the two bolts on the LEFT leg only
bounce forks violently for 3-4 goes
tighten right side bolts
loosen bar clamps and measure to edge of 'machined plateau'. the handlebar clamp bolts are a loose fit through the TCs and worth checking as well

Taffy

Hello all, I went through the front end today and here is what I found. The right side fork leg at the axle had been pushed in toward the center of the wheel 3mm. The amount of fork above the triple clamp( yolk) was no longer at the 5mm that I had originally set up, the left leg was still 5mm, the right leg was at 3.5mm. The clamps and stem bearings are all good and no bends in the tubes. I suspect the the fork height was my mistake, but the axle clamp shift happened in the crash. I have not had the chance to ride the bike yet, but from past experience would say that both of these issues would have a negative effect on handling. Thanks for help all.
