Hi All

I am new to the forum and awkwardly am going into a questions, or 2 at least.

I have always wanted a Husaberg SM and have found one that looks good, the bike I am looking at is a Husaberg FC 501 SM 1998

It is set up for road use but has no speedo or turn signals.

AAre these easy to sort out. I have founs a supplier for the speedo, its a Trail Tech Vapour Speedo Computer Husaberg 501.

How tricky will all this be? I have looked around the site but cannot see any topics on these issues.

Any help or advice would be great

Hey, the FC was a bike without papers i think, so you could become in serious trouble when you have an accident.

I did wonder, this bike has an MOT cert. Can anyone confirm if this is an off road only bike.

The FC was the MX version. It does not have an engine counterbalancer shaft (or electric starter) and can't be fitted with one without huge changes. The balancer makes it much more comfortable on the road.

The FCs came out in four or six speed transmissions. If you want to use it on the road you will probably need the six speed.

What kind of SM conversion has it had? Using it on road will depend on your local road registration regulations. I know here in Australia it would basically be a no-goer without doing something illegal. Put your location in your account details when you get a chance.

I have a Trailtech Vapor on my FE600E & it is brilliant! I only fitted it after the mechanical one died. In hindsight I'd fit the Vapor anyway.

I am in Scotland, the bike has front and rear lights but no turn signals. it is already registered for the road but has what is known as a day time MOT.To get it how I would ;like it I would need turn signals and a speedo/tacho

This bike has a 6 speed transmission, it could not be started but runs, fixing the non starter does not worry me too much as its simple mechanics, electrics are more of a concern.

How does the speedo work, this bike has no speedo at all, how is the Vapor connected?

The vapor is pretty simple to fit. I attached the instructions if they help.

A two wire cable goes to power supply - either DC from the battery or AC directly from the stator. Polarity is not important when running off DC.

Two wires go to the spark plug for the tacho - one connects to the engine or frame as ground and the other just wraps around the plug lead a few times but doesn't actually connect to the plug wire itself.

Anoter two wire cable goes to the engine temperature sensor, although you don't have to fit this if you don't want to. The sensor is in a short piece of 3/4" tube. You cut the hot water hose from the engine to the radiator and fit it into it. I found the water temp indication to be really useful.

The speed sensor is the last two wire cable that goes to a magnetic reed switch you mount near the front wheel. You fit a magnet to the wheel so it passes near the switch to sense the wheel speed. Probably the hardest part of fitting the Vapor is to mount a sensor neatly. Different Vapor kits have different shape sensors. I used a Vapor kit for a Kawasaki KLX and mounted the sensor on the right side in exactly the same spot as the original mechanical one.

There are two different mount surrounds available from Trailtech. One surround is aluminium and bulletproof. I used their plastic surround (see my gallery for pix) because it has four indicator lights - two turn signals, high beam and battery voltage warning. The blue piece around that on mine was a custom job but seems to work well. You don't have to use any surround if you don't want. A friend's GasGas has a Vapor fitted as OEM equipment and it has none.

I see now you can buy the Vapor in a black case called a Stealth unit. When I got mine they were all silver. The OEM GasGas one is red.
