Trying to keep the electric starter & battery FE450 2004

Okay - I'm trying to 'find the love' for my electric start, FE450 2004, she starts first/second kick reliability but struggles to start off the button?
New fully charged battery, checked starter brushes & motor turning at a good speed, checked stator for dirt/rust build up, clean, fitted new higher capacity cables from batt to earth & solenoid & starter, new spark plug, valves adjusted, carb sonically cleaned... but still only starts every now & then off the button after a lot of cranking. Give her a kick - lights right up. It's actually quicker to kick her into life than try the button?!
After being convinced it's good to keep - it makes the bike seem unreliable - as opposed to a good solid kick into life. If you hit the button IMMIDIATELY after a stall she fires right up, but leave her for a bit - nope...
Help & ideas please? Thanks

'04 models had a wonky batch of torque limiters that would slip too early and prevent engagement with the sprague. could that be your problem?

It is when cold but once warm it'll crank to the moon without slipping, the cranking speed is high too.
Really got me confused?!

the 04 to 08s are known as perfectly fine starters on the button. all you need to do is get it set up properly.

what good is 3.5kg or even 2kg if using a lithium-ion off the weight of the bike?

I don't get it....

Totally agree with Taffy, keep the starter, not worth the weight saving.
It should work fine.

Yup, that's why I want to get it working spot on. Just have no idea what it could be. I have a new standard battery - turns the engine over like a demon, but not starting. Give her a kick or two and she jumps into life? Why won't the starter do what my leg can do?
Any ideas?

I've tried no throttle, as when I kick start her, I've tried slight throttle, I've tried a pump then no throttle, I've tried half, full, warm lever, choke, you get the idea.
Any other techniques I can try?

no not really!

we sometimes have that trouble and it'll be some small detail. i would play with the PS underneath.

Ah, will try that.
Bit strange that she starts 1 kick though. I'll give it a half turn either way and hopefully that'll get her going.
Will report back
