Taffy,
Just to clarify, the stock RFS triples are a 20mm offset, and the 2smokes a 14mm. The sx and motards do get trick billet adjustable 18/20mm clamps this year though. The consensous with the KTM guys is that the 17mm offset works best (BRP brand???), a 3 degree difference. Did you measure the stock offset on your 02? If I remember mine measured out at 22mm. So some cheap ebay KTM clamps with 20mm will still pull it in a bit.

P.S. Husqy510 over at KTMTalk sells an adjustable front axle that will also act as an offset for the 26mm axle(2003+ WP), and is working on one for the 20mm axles.

well i brought home a set of TCs last night from my american buddy off the base, mark. they are off an '03 or '04 525EXC and they were pulled off due to a hairline crack that i can't even see!!! that the factory did a recall on.

the offset is 3mm different. the big holes line up and so does the back edge of the post hole. difference is that the berg hole is 22mm and the ktm hole is 28mm therefore making the centre 3mm further forward = 19mm offset!

i may put the front end back together with these if he'll let me do just one race with them on and promise not to kill myself!

i pulled the front in on my WR400 by about 5mm god i wish i could remember! but thew front end was kicked out like it is on my berg!

so really 22mm down to 17mm sounds good for me!

tell me more about the variable angle TCs that you've heard of? we had them in road racing but technology moved so quickly i don't think anyone but national and international riders had time to set them up!

i've always been a great believer that all bearings and alignments have to be spot on to avoid headshake and weaving-i don't think the ktms are any different.

The 18/20mm offset KTM clamps are also available through KTM hard parts, and they have pics and part#'s online. I believe they have an offset stem that you reverse for the offset. I'll check my buddy's 05 SMR next time I see him.

Since KTM has the clamps I went to see if Berg may offer them also for 05. They are not listed in the force parts, but I did find this:

Tripple clamp: Less offset for FS models, adjustable from 16 to 18 mm, machined of solid material

Taffy,
If memory serves there was indeed a recall on triple clamps on the 03 KTM.I remember there was a manufacturing defect in them and they had a number of them break. This was a safety related issue and you may be wise to rethink using these recalled clamps.....nsman

Hi guys,
I always believed that ALL EXCs, RFS or 2 stroke were/are fitted with the 20 mm offset clamp.

In 03, the 2 stroke SX range had a flirt with a 14 mm offset, and basically got canned for it.

In 04, the SX 2 stroke KTMS reverted back to the 20mm offset

In 05, the SX got the 18/20 mm adjustable, the EXC range kept the 20mm

If in doubt of particular units, quick verification is last 3 digits of part no. stamping on top clamp 020=20mm etc

I always remove my 20s and use a set of MSC 16mm units.

If anybody knows any of the above to be incorrect I am quite happy to be proven so, and welcome the input.

And Taffy,
Whats going on? KTM fuel taps? KTM triple clamps? Is this really showing a secret desire of KTM ownership?

Next thing we know you will be trying to source orange plastics for your Berg !! LOL !!!!

Cheers!
AUSBERG.

Yes. Totally correct.
It was an issue with some 03 clamps apparently.
If they are cracked, discard them PLEASE!
Triple clamp failure is a scary thought..........

I stand corrected.

Can someone ellaborate a bit more on the eccentric front axle? Does changing the trail at the axle make much difference in handling?

I am using the "husqy510" + or- 2mm offset eccentric axle in my '04 KTM 525 EXC with excellent results. His latest version features a 4 mm adjustment range. The adjustment allows for the addition or subtraction of up to 4 mm of trail in gradual increments. This axle is a viable alternative to different triple clamps. Click here for more info.

My new Berg is a bit nervous in the nasties, looks like rotating that thing forward for more trail makes a difference. Have to contact the fellow, and thank you much for the info.

Moving the axle fowards actually decreases the trail. Moving the axle rearward increases the trail thereby, at least theoretically, making the bike a little more stable, i.e. makes the steering a little more self-centering or with more castor effect. Moving the axle back would also put a little more weight on the front wheel perhaps giving the tire a better "bite".

man i've really done it this time! i have a set of 2003 KTM 125SX clamps coming. we reckon on 14mm offset!

i don't think i'm man enough for this! i'm gonna die!

what a way to go though!

nothing will have been seen like it since superfrog 'evil' du hamel and the H2 kwacker!

still. i did write my will out only recently!
