DAKAR OFFICIAL RELEASE

DEATH OF FABRIZIO MEONI
It is with huge sadness that the rally was informed this morning of the death of Fabrizio MEONI (n°4), one of the greatest rally-raid champions ever, after a crash just after CP1, at km 184, at 10h15 (GMT) during stage 12 between Atar and Kiffa.

A medical helicopter of the organisation was immediately sent on the scene of the accident at 10h36 (GMT) and the doctors treated the champion for 45 minutes.

However, the two-time Dakar winner, aged of 47 years, died of his injuries at 11h11 (GMT).

Fabrizio MEONI, a huge figure of the rally, was 2nd overall in the bike standings, behind Cyril Despres and was competing on the race for the 13th time.

His body was taken to Atar.

The entire Dakar caravan wishes to express its sincere condolences to his family, his friends and his many admirers.

Just read the news myself on Cycle News online. Watching Fabrizio win the Dakar was the soul reason I decided to get back into off-road riding in 2003. Also influenced my decision to buy my first KTM. My feelings on the rest of the rally are mixed. KTM is suggesting the rest of its rides retire from the rally. I'm not sure Fabrizio would have wanted this, but it certainly would be easy to understand. Godspeed Fabrizio, and many blessings to your family and children.

Motorcycle sport, which has the ability to add so much to the lives of so many people ,unfortnunatly also can take so much.To-day is a sad day indeed.

have you seen some of the accidents they are having nowadays in that event? colin mccrae's car was blitzed. the entire rear end was missing.

pretty hairy stuff. it's getting to be like the TT; '100 of us are in the race and one of us won't be here at the end'.

best wishes to fabrizio's dependants.

regards

Uhh,

I´m shocked. That´s really sad!
A few month ago it was Richard Sainct who deceased and now it is Meoni.
Both of them were really cool guys, I met them on the KTM festivals
in Belgium and Austria. I can´t believe it.

I must say, I don´t watch the Dakar rally on TV too much, cos of the
domination of KTM. It´s boring. There is no doubt that KTM will win this Rally.
So now it´s the first time I get this sad message.

All I can say now is: many blessings to Fabrizios family and children.

Apparently he died of a heart attack which explains somewhat why he crashed where he did as no one could believe that he could have crashed there as there was nothing there that would unseat even a ridder of much lower skill level.

A very sad day for all.

Cheers

i lost a mate years ago at cadwell park who supposedly had a brain heomerrage whilst riding. i doubt it somehow and think that he fell first and then had it.

but one can't argue when someone falls off for no reason in the middle of nowhere.

very sad.
