Torque wrenches for valve adjustments - size limitations?

Well after a couple of parts sagas, and waiting for spring to arrive, I am almost ready for the inaugural putt-putt on my first berg.

Have been assembling tools required for servicing and I recall someone here recommending a beam style torque wrench for doing the valves but I can't recall if it was a 1/4 or 3/8's drive - it had to do with not much room in the valve box and the poster stated the newer ratchet heads wrenches definately wouldn't fit.

I have searched but can't find the thread - will a 3/8's drive head fit? (1/4 drive ones seem to be hard to locate...)

Cheers

Hello Mark,

I use a 3/8" 0-600 in/lb craftsman wrench 9-4463 that I have had for at least 45 years. The closest I can find at Sears is the KD Tools Beam Torque Wrench S2956, Sears number 00999789000 for $73 US.

I would prefer a 1/4" drive beam wrench that went to 200in/lb or so for torquing the valve screw locking nuts and the cam cover screws.

You also need a set of compact short reach Craftsman 6 point Sockets. The 10mm socket will be needed for the valve screw lock nuts.

Regards,

Joe

I got one of these recently, http://www.justtools.com.au/prod4295.htm very nice it is too with a calibration certificate and would be suitable. I got it primarily for the triple clamps as the new 650 one only wants 12 nm for the lower clamp and my 3/8 drive proved to be a bit out that low in the range.

Delivery domestically in Oz was fine too a couple of days, they seem well setup for web ordering and presumably can send OS, otherwise see if you can get one locally. Currently about 82 c US buys 1 OZ dollar.
