top end noise

hi guys
firstly i'd like to say how much this site has helped me understand these temperamental beasts since buying my first one on an impulse!
i have a noise in the top end of my 1990 fc501, i have adjusted the valve clearances to the prescribed tolerances but there seems to be a lot of lateral movement in the rocker arm, i have followed the instructions in the 'doc' but every time i tighten the bolt up on top that goes through the arm the play returns... incidentally, if the bolt goes through the arm how do you get adjustment?? can this be causing the noise? the bike kicks starts and runs fine otherwise.

I would lift the cover and check the roller bearings and also the bushings and shafts for the rockers. Also check wear on camchain and upper (aluminum?) cam gear. Check he cam lobes and cam bearings ofcourse. I don´t know how many hours on yours, but after 100 hrs anything is possible I would think. I always pull apart when I suspect trouble, and I´m usually glad I did.

Snug up the bolts and give the rocker shaft end plugs a bit of a smack using a brass or lead mallet.

The same technique works well on un-responsive teenagers..... 8O

thanks guys... (ministers and otherwise!)
decided to bite the bullet... took the engine out and sent it to dave clarke racing who freshened it up and did some other stuff for only £300 ... top service in only 2 days! highly recommended to anyone in blighty. :D

Husadaddy, would you tell us what they did to you engine, just for our information? Might help someone else out. :D DC

they stripped the engine, put in two new tappet screws, re-seated the valves, new main bearing, new selector forks, fixed the rocker shaft screw with a helicoil and basically checked and re-adjusted everything to how it should be.
