firstly i'd like to say how much this site has helped me understand these temperamental beasts since buying my first one on an impulse!
i have a noise in the top end of my 1990 fc501, i have adjusted the valve clearances to the prescribed tolerances but there seems to be a lot of lateral movement in the rocker arm, i have followed the instructions in the 'doc' but every time i tighten the bolt up on top that goes through the arm the play returns... incidentally, if the bolt goes through the arm how do you get adjustment?? can this be causing the noise? the bike kicks starts and runs fine otherwise.
