Took a little ride this weekend with John Shaggy and my racing partner Dano. Camped out in an area that I had been looking at for a while and wanted to explore. The ride was meant to accomplish several things.
The four musketeers have not been able to make a trip together for a few years due to "life". It was time for "MAN" camp. Loaded up with steaks, salsa, chili fixins, beer , ghettoburner with firewood, husabergs and fuel.

I have had a problem with the mighty FIFIDDY blowing its top in the past even when cold out. I asked the BOSSMAN to hook me up with some trick BLUE HOSE . He didnt think the thermostat could be causing it but.......................... I abused the clutch to no end in a TIGHT rocky 1 gear wash, not a drop outta the berg and the K*M was blowing like a tea kettle. Overheating problem solved ( i hope)

We thought there had been some rain or snow east of us but ..........NO! On the other hand we did find some great sand washes with no tracks in them. We got in one wash about 20 minutes into our first ride in this area that went for 12 miles.. . There was a lot of yelling and laughing as we scrapped mile after mile some times making the "right " decision on a finger of the wash and getting ahead and then making the wrong one. Man it is sooooo fun to ride with good friends that will scrap clean and you can trust to hold their line. YYYYAAAAAAHHHHHHOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!When we hit the road at the end of that wash all we could do was laugh and smile. The rest of the day was just a good and we returned to camp about 80 miles later and ready for a BARLEY POP. So far so good on this reconnaissance trip.

Now I know some of you have heard of my Chili but you can always improve and I had a couple of new ingredients to try out before Moab. From the empty bowls and eruptions around the fire about two hours later............ success#3 can any body say Serrano?

Woke up about 7 built some coffee and breakfast. With bodies and bikes fueled up off we went in another direction to try and make a big loop. Well.............. my best rides seem to be when it dont go quite as planned. Found another great wash and next thing I know we are on a two track and coming up fast on a .......... CORVETT. gotta love Nevada.. you can see anything out in the middle of NOWHERE. just ahead we saw three more camped out at an old mine. WTF are they doing out there? oh well each their own. thats the other great thing about Nevada.....live and let live............... Get into a big drainage and soon Dano and I are out in front and we dont even see dust behind us.... John and Shaggy are together so lets rock and roll.......... Dano is about 15 years younger than me and fast as all get out, While he dont get to ride too much he is still a master of the big save and I am in the seat to see some great ones.. he must be getting tired cause now I am right on his tail and the yelling laughing is starting all over again and then he launches off a big bump and it all starts to go bad. not too high but the front wheel just clips a rock and I know he aint gonna save this one. he dont and it is spectacular and best of all he bounces right up and tries to get the bike picked up before the camera comes out but Im faster on the draw and have proof. hehehs the others catch up and we regroup. we try a couple of different ways to get over a range and get deadended on two tracks or just too plain steep and rocky in the washes.... not too many trails out here in fact we saw ZERO wild horses or trails..... too many cows i guess...... back to the north and on top finally. Lunch of jerky and trail mix, (ENSURE for the old guy John). Shaggy whips out his cell phone since we are on top of the world (dumb ***) and calls in to see if they need him to work his second job as a ski run groomer......... They do and he needs to be at work at 3 am so our ride is going to be shortened a bit . but not much. Drop into a good looking wash and come to a cliff............try three ways off the top and finally I think we can make this one to the bottom........ we do but not without some drama.......... why is it that its always steeper than you think?????????? hehehe
we finally make it down and back in the general direction of camp and hit another great wash. in fact its soo good we pass right by camp and when it finally peters out we have to backtrack several miles. Looks like this area has potential for a new favorite riding area. For me I like areas that dont get much use, NO WHOOPS, fast sand washes, long ridge lines with few cliffs, and some two tracks to rest on and connect the dots.

Since Shaggy has to go to work thats more beer and an extra steak for us . Another good meal , warm fire , good company, cold beer and a million stars.

John , Shaggy and Dano.......... thanks for a good MAN CAMP weekend.

more report

I must say that it was great fun to ride with good friends, haven't ridden with Dano in some time and it sure was fun. You guys have something to look forward to with Bobs chilli, it kept me warm and amused almost all night 8O . Ridding was great that last sand wash was a gas, was thinking that I was really fast to bad I was so far behind that no one else could tell. That is pretty much where I spent the whole ride, looking at the other peoples dust, easier to pick your line thru the washes. Funny how one good get off slows you down, not that I was really fast to begin with. Well thats about all have some pics and will post later. Neil

Thanks for the great write-up Bobzilla. Sounds like you guys had quite a blast.

I never even knew what a sand wash was till I went on the Phoenix ride last year. Great fun! I got to dice it out with Colby (cheeseburger) for quite a while. If the 11mile wash would've been just a little longer I think DezDuster, (who had to pick his way through the crowd), would've caught up with us. well, maybe~~~~~:D

Hey Bobzilla,
Great write up and sounds like you guys had one of those rare rides that you will always remember.
I can relate to the riding with mates that you can trust when the going gets furious. I have had a few memorable rides with an american (i dont hold that against him, he he) mate of mine ( now an aussie - he saw the light). and that is what its all about isnt it. No crap, politics or inflated egos, a few mates out having a blast with some really serious racing but not caring who gets there first and some really good laughs at those unlucky enough to go down.
Mmmm ......got me thinkin now, must catch up with the crazy yank and go out and show each other who can ride the best..... then again we dont really care

Bobzilla, Thanks, for the review of your ride/weekend. With the terrible winter conditions back here in PA reading your experience was great. Hell, I even think a I felt some warmth from the campfire -- gotta love those sand washes, your own version of Daytona! Love railing those walls one after another, like one of those bikes in a cage. Nice Job. While you were out on your MAN thing I had a great time at work all weekend. Thanks for the tease!!
