Hi All,
I'm getting sick of trying to start my 2003 400FE, I can start it easy enough from cold, several kicks and sometimes even on the E start. Problems start when its hot,it will stall, and will take up to 3/40 kicks sometimes, drains the battery after 3-4 trys(new last year apparently) and is a real pain if dropped when offroad,it can take up to 5-10 mins to get restarted and leave you tired and pissed off! I think I need a Keihin FCR 39, I think this is the oneTAFFY has recommended, Has anyone got one for sale? How much should i pay? Thought i would try here before the EBAY route!
Cheers, Gerry.

gerry

e-bay is the way i think. although the breakers might be flooded with them soon.

things you should have right before you give up:

1) do the dead stop method for correct TDC. mark it, strobe it. makes a difference when they're wrong!

2) go for a posh plug! an IXU24 for me or an iridium NGK.

3) do my kickstart mod

4) i sit at the top front of the tank, some sit pillion. sit at the front.

5) why not do joeusa's mod to your dell orto - he swore by it! and jet it his way as well. doesn't matter that you have a 38mm - it'll work.

6) tappets and tappets again!

7) new plug cap

8) try and adjust the air screw different ways for re-kicking. sometimes what loses you 250 revs helps it restart everytime!

Hi Taffy, thanks for the reply.
I was looking for the quick solution!!
I'm not great with the mechs
!I will try a few of the things you have said.
I'm still learning in the rough stuff, last time out i stalled/fell off 5 times, trying to restart the bike took more out of me than the ride!
The bike just never seems to catch when hot,
I have a new iridium plug fitted and use the expensive super unleaded fuel,
Plus I'm short !!

FE 400 dellorto starting issues

Gerry,
Try something easy and inexpensive first:
1. Like Taffy stated make sure the timing is correct and wires and all are good. Do you have strong spark, Hot and cold?
2. Try lowering the needle on the slide, one position at the time. It makes a huge difference. I found that running the bike lean really helps with the starting mode. I have to use the choke more now to get the bike going un-less I just shut it down. In the earlier days I never needed to do this and had similar hot start issues that you are describing.

Don't forget about the CDI jet. My '03 FE400 was missing the jet and it made starting the bike while hot a pain. I put the jet in and the bike fires up no problems.
