Too rich?

I'd like to describe a problem I had recently and get your opinions.
About 30 miles into an enduro, and during a long tight test section, I had an "episode" where the bike started running like crap. Actually it felt like I was dragging an anchor. The bike did not want to rev and it was sputtering and popping badly. It was also very hot. I thought I was going to be stranded in the woods. Luckily after I rounded a turn there was a gas stop. I refueled the bike (still had 1/3 of tank) and waited out my 8 minutes or so. After starting it back up, it was fine. The rest of the race was fine. I'm running Evans coolant to prevent losing coolant during overheating, which brings on a whole new set of questions like "when is hot too hot?", but it's been recommended to me to drop the main jet because a hot engine requires less fuel. But if this incident was from being too rich, wouldn't it be rich all the time? Obviously it could have just been trash in the carb, but I'm still debating dropping the main.

Thanks in advance
Dalton

Hi Dalton,
What is your current jetting?
What are your climatic conditions?

Note:
In tight technical applications the constant throttle movement can indeed induce a rich condition via accelerator pump dribble.

Personally, When I re-jet, the pump is deactivated for just such a reason.

Kind Regards,
Dale

Hi Dale,

I'm not positive of the needle, I think it's an ODBT if that makes sense. I do know it's on the second clip. 188 main and 38 pilot. This was at the Acadiana enduro last weekend in Louisiana. Temps around 80.

Hi Dalton,
Quite honestly if you are rich with those settings something is terribly wrong.

Review several fuel posts including: Jetting

If you are interested I offer a jet kit which to date has a 98% "customer satisfaction" rating.

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,
Dale

Thanks for your help Dale.

Well, I rode 4 long hard hours today in about the same conditions, and never once had a problem. I'm going to chalk it up to a fluke thing for now. If it comes back I'll definately go the jet kit route.

By the way, I took the advice of several riders here and got the tall seat. Big difference. I also dropped the countershaft sprocket to a 13 and it made a huge improvement "in the tights". You have to shift more, but there's gobs more torque.

Appreciate your help,
Dalton

For what its worth. Between the Evans, Lineaweaver jet kit and dropping my countershaft sprocket, my overheating issues are greatly reduced. With the cooling fans running I have yet to have any overheating problems.
