Tire and mousse combination

Well color me confused. I am not trying to start another "what tire is best", or "mousse vs. UHD tube vs. tubeless" thread. I have read all those. But I have decided to use mousse front and rear in my '10 570 FE for the upcoming Baja 500. Being completely new to the whole mousse concept I have a few questions:

1) Michelin recommends (strongly) only using their tires when using mousse bibs. Is this BS or does some tiny difference in shape matter?

2) Must I use the exact mousse size to match the tire? I presume yes but there are a limited number of choices and I'm not sure I see what I want in the mousse size.

3) And now the dusie question- What tire/mousse combo in what size? My goal is the finish the race with no tire problems. I can give up a little on performance.

Thanks guys,

In the last B1K we used 140 Michellin bib in 120 Bridgestone ED78Desert rear tire and 80/100 bib in the MX 71 Dunlop front tire. Rear tire is a pain to install but we had zero issues with it.

What tires are you going to use, exactly? You know that extended high speeds with the Mousse can cause problems.

Last year i used the Michelin Desert front + rear with mousse in Tunesia.
3.000 km sand, rocks and mud with no problems.
They have a lot of experience in the Paris- Dakar races.

I have used all brands of tyres with mine, with no dramas. But for size I can say go smaller sizes as they get older. Or risk the tyre spinning on rim, and the rim looking like a aus 50 cent coin. :(

I used a Michelin M16 mousse with a Michelin Desert on the front of my 570 and an M18 rear with a Michelin AC10 tyre - this is what the guy from Michelin recommended.

I didn't actually like the Desert - much too hard a compound for where I was riding but the rear tyre was fine. I'm now using the same mousses with Metzeler 6-day tyres with no issues whatsoever. Unless you're fitting some outrageous tyre size, I think that you could use Michelin mousses with any tyre.

Thanks guys this is all helpful. The Baja 500 is a mix of every surface but mostly harder dirt roads with rocks. I don't anticipate I'll be running much over 70 mph for any sustained length of time. I'm riding it solo and need to ratchet everything back a notch or two to make sure I finish.

I'm just about to fit Maxxis FIM enduros with the Maxxis mouses, I'm told the tires offer great grip and wear well.
I'll let you know how they go.

I still haven't figured out why people use mousses when the Tubliss is available. I've been using it for 4 years w/o a problem.
