I hate to sound to seriously brain dead but I have a large question. How can you check or adjust the timing on a 96 FE501? Give me a good answer and I will be happy to go back to my pints and then will adjust it. Preferably the more detailed the better.
Thanks and take care.

Bill,

I can't remember the details, but the manual has a pretty good description for my 98 which I assume is the same. Manuals are here, or at berg.se I recall that I made up a degree wheel of some sort out of some card to assist.

on my 98, there was a v or diamond shaped mark on the flywheel which, when lined up with a scribe mark at about 11oclock on the case edge where the mag cover went on while at tdc compression (turning clockwise til just after the intake valves closed and the piston up). at this point you poke a 2mm thick rod thru the tiny hole at the bottom of the flywheel and it should engage a similar hole in the stator. if not, pull the flywheel and loosen the stator screws somewhat, turn the stator in the needed direction, retighten screws a bit, put the flywheel back on without the nut to check, repeat til aligned, retighten/ loctite/ retorque, etc.
if your 96 does not have the marks, you will need to make a degreewheel.
