I have just replaced my cam chain on my 00 fe 501 e . i lined up the cam with the lobes facing down and the cam bolt on the gear in the vertical position as instructed in my service manual . i marked everything with a scribe when i disassembled the top end but didn't mark any thing on the crank., my question is this . i brought the piston up to tdc before connecting the chain and there it sits . how do i know if i am on the rite stroke at tdc . there are no marks on any of the gears in the bottom end , and my service manual does not mention which stroke the piston should be on tdc .. thanks

It doesn't matter because if you turn the crankshaft 360 degrees it will be back where you started, at top dead center. Just make sure the piston is at top dead center!

Top dead center is the important parameter along with the cam wheel bolts forming a line perpendicular to the top of the cylinder head.

If you are using a master link (and not a rivet link) for the cam chain make sure you assemble it in the correct direction, with the rounded closed end of the link pointing in the direction of cam rotation.

Joe

what joe is saying is that the bike parks everytime around so therefore the cam can be either 'both lobes up' or 'both lobes down' and all will be well. i prefer both lobes up for checking and THEN and only THEN turn the crank 360d so the lobes face downwards. then fit the rocker cover.

thanks.. i didnt know the spark plug fired on both strokes ....
