Timing marks

I,ve just replaced the stator on a 02 650. The right bearing had gone and wiped out the stator etc.
There are two marks on the flywheel can someone tell me which one I need to line up with the stator to correctly set the ignition.
The pictures on the manual are not clear enough to show this.

Cheers

the answer is neither of them!

i would like to hear dales opinion on this as well if he should read it.

basically, the gap between the two lines? well that gap should be repeated to the RIGHT of the pair of lines and another line drawn to make it three. you are now at TDC.

then the new line should line up with the centre of the threaded hole that's there for the cover. then put your sidecover back on and the line on the stator wants to be in line with the right hand line.

having used a strobe though, i simply made sure the line through the stator was 1/3 of the way out from the left of the window.

Taffy,

In clear you suggest drawing a third mark to the right of the two already existing marks, with the same spacing?

Then to use this new mark to easily find TDC by aligning it with the allen bolt thread on top?

When you put the cover back on, then the stator mark should align with the now middle flywheel mark to make it right?

what i'm saying is that TDC is actually in line with a third line which is to the right of the other two and equally spaced (again). this new line should line up with the centre of the middle of the screew hole in the case. you are now at TDC.

however i THEN did my ignitin timing with a strobe noting dale lineaweaver'd comments that i show in the owners doc about the advance.

my bike gained 300 RPM when i advanced my ignition and it starts far more easily now.

Hi Taff

I see you have a 02 400 would the instruction you have given apply to the 02 650 as well ?

i'm 95% certain!

i have yet to get another rider to do the 'dead stop' method to get this sorted properly. anyone who has ever tickled an engine will have this tool. it's important that you find TDC this way. the strobe bit is the easy bit!
