Hi!
I noticed that there´s no camchain lock on my 400 -03.How do I dismantling it?
My problem is the e-start (battery is ok).I´ve talked to my dealer and he said that the extra valvelifter(centrifugalone) on the cam should lift 0,7mm.I guess mine don´t.Is it possible to weld a small piece on it and grind down to 0,7mm?
What weldingmaterial if so?
Hope that I´ve expressed myself understandable.

chrille4t,

The normal procedure for removing the cam chain is to use a chain tool to break and then rivet.

Prior to 2004 the typical resolution for the decompression device was to weld a small amount to increase the exhaust valve lift somewhat. however, it is now much easier to just replace the old one with one from the 2004 650.

If you are just looking to modify or replace the bob weight, you can do this without breaking the cam chain. All you need to remove are the rocker cover, tensioner and left side camshaft bearing, then you can pull out the decompression bobweight, do what you need to and replace it.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Simon

If you do do it without breaking the chain be careful the spring on the decompressor doesn't fall into the cases !

Simon how does the 04 decompressor differ to the 02 ?

Does this help with the electric starting of the 04 ?

Hi lloyd,

It provides better decompression during cranking through both a slight modification of the bobweight and the actuator.

Yes.

Simon,

I am soon going to get GGR to rebuild me engine (120 hours). Do u think the 04 decomp mechanism is a worthwhile upgrade. My 2002 650 has never started on the button.

How much do u think it will cost to get the electric start to work ?

If you want your 650 to start on the button, it is probably going to be a necessary upgrade.

Gary has fixed more e-starts than you can shake a stick at, so he knows what is required.

As for price, you really would need to speak to him because he will be able to look at your bike and make sure nothing else is needed on top of the bobweight to fix the problem (e.g. larger battery, faulty connections etc. etc.)

Do u think it will still electric start with a GW G2 cam and an Omega high comp piston ?

Cheers for the advise.

Lloyd.

I really couldn't say Lloyd, I think you're out on your own with that combination and e-start. The only way to tell will be to fit it all up and test it - or let Gary do it for you. Swaping camshafts over for testing is a fairly trivial matter. The piston clearly isn't.
