Timing Chain Tensioner Fail

Hi guys!

I wonder if someone can help me. My timing chain tensioner broke, pulled it out and saw that the moving part, the shaft which has those many teeth is okay, but the small trigger part ( which is supposed to stop it from moving) of it has its teeth broken off. I don't know if that small part can be bought separately, and I was wondering if you guys can answer that for me!?

Thanks, Tom

replace the whole tensioner.if it cleaned the teeth off the "stopper", then it probably hurt the shaft......regardless, the smaller piece usually isn't available separately anyway...false economy to only replace the smaller piece.....think about what happens if the tensioner hand grenades......things get really ugly!!

Tom,
probably a very good time to consider replacing the camchain too. Which bike do you have? Depending on age and engine type, there may well be 'upgrade' options available.

The tensioner is not an expensive item, and as catman has pointed out, the consequences of bodging a solution could be... inconvenient, at best.

Cheers... Paul

Hi!
The bike is a 2003 FE 650. The chain has been replaced around 4 months ago, haven't ridden much since, maybe 200 kilometers, not more. Any idea how much a new tensioner cost and where can i get one online?

Thanks, Tom

Hi

You could also change the chain blade to the newer one, for better suport of the chain.

Taffy can get you this things.

Tom,
as usual Zaga is completely correct: unless you're in the US, I'd go straight to Taff; otherwise I'm sure one of our American chums will tell you the best solution.

I trust you have the steel cam sprocket...

Cannot tell you the price of parts off the top of my head, and as it was a while ago since I last bought cam-drive parts, it would probably be inaccurate anyway. Taffy?

Cheers... Paul

yes I have the steel cam sprocket, ive also looked on taffmeister's website and the tensioner is £27. I have a friend who has a 2004 Husa 650, which he wrecked and if the chain tensioner is any good i will buy it from him, if not I will ask Taffy to send me one.
Thanks for the help mates,
Tom

You could go with a manual tensioner, lots of people do.
DJH carries a tensioner for your model, the part # is DJH 1100B
here's his site- the earlier Bergs aren't listed, but if you personally contact him, he'll set you up.
