well, on my 1400th post just to say that if you can download, modify, add, change anything to make the info sheet better i'd appreciate it.

i again ask schwim to put this on the site somewhere (as well as three write-ups i have now downloaded to UHE) please.

the sheet is only as good as all the info 'we' put in it and all those that offer info get recognition for it.

i'm looking at little strip and rebuild tips. i have only ever had the sidecovers off and the cylinder head. but i've learnt many things on my way so if you have any tips put them in the document or leave them here for me. look to the tail end of the document for lots of unfinished business.

once again i invite anyone with a totally different model to take the sheet and make it relative to YOUR model, the sheet can be your start line.

so here it is again!

oooh, yes, I have an amendment - the symptom for the reed valve stuck open is excessive oil blowing out of the breather, not engine smoking.

Ta,

Front sprockets are identical to 2 smoke Huskies (CR or WR) but can use 4 stroke Husky ones with a shim.

cheers boys!

does anyone know the service life of each part in an engine as many of you are always quoting the hours they should do?

do the '02s have single bearings at each end of the balancer shaft? what's the story on the twina and singel bearings here?

personally, anyone with an '04 parts book-can you check which cam the 450's have? FC? FE? FX? whatever they're making?

IF YOU'VE LEARNT SOMETHING, I HAVEN'T PUT IT IN-THEN TELL ME AND I WILL!!!!!!!!!!!!

regards

Taffy

Taffy:

The 04 parts manual lists only two camshafts.

Part # 800.36.010.000 for the 450/501/550, 03-04

Part # 820.36.010.000 for the 650, 04 only

Only one camshaft gear for all is listed, Part # 800.36.011.000 fits 03-04

Unfortunately it does not specify if the cam chain tensioner will fit older models :(

Taffy,

the twin and single bearings are the ones that the counterbalance weight spins on - located on the crank. They're not on the countershaft. The counter shaft only has the bearing that sits behind the water pump and another ball bearing sitting just behind the cam chain gear.

The twin bearings on the counter balance weight came about due to lots of premature failure in the 2001 650s. Most bikes from mid 02 will have had them in as standard. Previous ones may have had an upgrade - but this is by no means certain.

Cheers,
Simon

Taffy, I just wanted to thank you for your efforts in putting the sheet together!!! :)

Hopefully in time I will be able to add some good insights. I know I just had my suspension redone and we went to a dual stage valve stack in the forks and it works very well.

thanks AJT

let us hope you only strip it when you need to! (thanks to the info sheet of course!)

husabutt
now that they've gone to KTM part # we're a little in the dark. same cam for EVERY model-mmmmmmmm!

simon
guess you could tell i've not had to strip it!

if anyone has stripped an engine and wants to make a list of everything that they've learnt then feel free to let us know. i don't have a workshop manual just a parts manual.

here is a list of things that might come to mind and things known

the info sheet presently states
which way the gear selector drum must face
bolt the clutch pressure plate on-it'll only fit in 1 of 6 positions
look at the selector fork for chafing
recognise the cam gear position before pulling apart
clean the reed valve
go to two thin oil seals on the water pump

i could go on but you get my drift

anyway. about those hours lads please!

02 FX470E Transmission/Engine bearing's info
This is the bearing for you 470 people to watch
1. Ball bearing Counter balancer driving shaft 1ea 360 036-01 SKF 61905-2RS1
2. Ball bearing Crank shaft 2ea 360 001-01 SKF 6206/C4
3. Ball Bearing Cam shaft 2ea 360 000-01 SKF 6201/? will get
4. Ball bearing Secondary shaft 1ea 360-002-01 SKF NJ 205-ECP/C3
5. Ball bearing Main gear shift 1ea 360 004-01 SKF 6203/C3

I'm not sure if you want this info? But I first put the husaberg part number then I put the IBI number off the bearing. The only source of metal I found in my engine other than the failed bearing was:

1. Both pieces of the kick starter Decompression mechanism had obvious deterioration.
2. Very slight scuffing of the case behind the kick starter gear wheel.
3. Deterioration of the Auto. Decompression device, (on cam wheel dog)

For all of you 470 owners who are experiencing large amounts of metal on your oil strainer. I’d get a magnet and find out if it ferrous. If it is, do an inspection ASAP of your countershaft driver bearing. This bearing could cause a castrostrophic failure. I found balls of this bearing jammed between the counter balancer and case.

ta for that, i would guess that the 400 is the same. the first bearing being a 2rs has two rubber seals does it? is that right?

? = one camshaft bearing i recall being standard and the other is a C3 so i'll take it i'm right there and pop them in the list.

Taffy: I didn't see any rubber in the motor or any sealed or shielded bearings. This bearing was totally destroyed! So all I was able to retrieve was the balls and races. The 2RS, I feel is the race hardness and finish, ball count & fit. My father in law works at NSK a bearing manufacture and is trying to get some info on the bearing for me. In all this wasn’t that tough of a motor to pull apart. I do have one question for assemble. How do you folks line up the timing marks on the counter shaft gear and balancer weight? When you can't see them?

I just got the phone with a SKF rep. From what he explained to me, the C3/C4 is how tight the bearing fits on the shaft. I have both a C3 & C4 6206 bearing in front of me. With a high quality vernier caliper, I can not measure any difference? The C3 is supposed to be the tighter fit?

marlin

someone is pulling your pisser i'm afraid!

'C' bearings are made to a higher tolerance than standard bearings but they are also made looser to work well when metal expands due to heat. so we find C3's in an engine and a standard bearing in a wheel for example. 'C's cost more obviously and manufacturers get away with puttining just one 'C' on the SOHC for instance (thus answering your own "?").

2RS stands for 2 rubber seals, 1 RS is obviously for 1. however i see it says "-2-RS-1" so it may be 1 rubber seal which i think is correct and the 2 is part of the part number.

Gentlemen,

I've got to jump in here.

Visit the SKF web site here:

SKF link

You will see that you are both right, its a matter of the radial clearance in the bearing assembly, that is, how much radial clearance (looseness) there is between the inner and outer bearing races when the bearing is not mounted in a bore and/or on a shaft. Once you go to the above web page and read the information and then check out table 3, you will have a more complete understanding. The radial clearance is not the bearing ID or OD size, it is the looseness between the inner and outer race surfaces when the balls are installed. This is achieved when grinding the ball raceways in thebearing races.

Husaberg utilizes interference fits between the bearing and the mating shafts and cases to insure that the races are secure over the operating temperature range and do not move (fret) during engine operation. This preload condition stresses the the outer race making it strain or shrink a thousands of an inch or so and the inner race to expand a similar amount because of the interference fit on the shaft.

The amount of interference required by the design determines the tightness of the fit and therefore the amount of internal clearance necessary for a bearing so it will still have adequate internal clearance to operate after being installed.

Hope this helped,

thank god for that!

my vanity-saved!!!!!

does my bum look big in this?

Thanks Joe for your input. I was just trying to make good discussion on a topic that affects all us.

Json: can we make this info sheet a "Sticky" with a link to it hopefully on this server. That way it will always be at the top and we can keep it going. If Taffy gets an 04 starting an 04 sheet would be great also.

here

a few more mods done but i haven't been told by anyone how you come up with all the different hours that parts last for and i've had a look and found nowt!

Taffffffffffffyyyyyyyyy YOU are obviously a fan of the "Fast Show"?

is there anyone who would take my 'XIII' copy, which i have yet to post, and splatter it in the necassary hyperlinks to the various galleries and threads of this site?

i'm just not into 'puters enough to want to tackle it.

regards

Taffy
