well i've stuck this into two threads and it really is hard just to get a reaction from you lot. not even some of the time, sheeesh, all the time mereckons!!!!

ok, most are running - we'll call them - 'grape shape cams by now. the cam flanks are softer and the cam follower bearings seem to be coping better.

the cams have broader timing and we have almost too much overlap - certainly enough to play with!

then we have the fact that all the exhaust valves i ever see are covered in carbon and don't appear to be seating correctly?

so what about a wider exhaust clearance? if the thread is 0.7mm and we take a 1/6th we get 0.12mm which is correct. that's .005" in old money! there are 28 thou to a turn. what do we try for?

.007" is a 1/4 turn. what would the valves look like then?

i don't think we would damage the valve gear at all doing this and idle would be better due to less reversion and overlap.

what would it run like then? a definate and worthwhile try with dual spring kits, what about conicals?????

My dealer had suggested that I do my valves at 1/4 turn. I did them 3 times this way. At the first 3 hours , 16 and 32. The idle seemed good and ran well untill I heard about the 1/6. Just did it a little over 50 hours and it has a crisp response and feels torqy. I take good care of this bike changing the oil every 3 or 4 hours. I thought my dealer was a real pro. Owner is the mechanic and he rides bergs with his sons. He also told me the repair manual was not available anymore. I downloaded it on the net. I'll never tell him about the 1/6 adjustment. Some things are better left unsaid.

I just did my friend's 04 FE650. Honestly I set them on the loose end of 1/6th, probably more like 1/5th. It's definitely kicking over easier, and idling better too. Most were close to spec except for one exhaust which was tight.

My vote falls to the 1/5th category. 1/6th is proven. 1/4th might start making me nervous.

I still do mine with the feeler guages, but I dont have the bent tip ones, so I reckon by the time you get the gap set and locked up, usually erring on the cautious side and not doing the adjusters up too tight, the clearance is likely to be closer to the 6 thou. better to have a bit of play than have them too tight.

has anyone thought why we never have a shiny metal ring to the seat of the valve and the seat isn't a lot better. i've seen other bike sdo it but not as badly as the husaberg.
