Tickover a tad high ... hopefully simple

Ok so had first ride on my bike today and sweet mary its got some poke !

after i had pulled up back at my house i noticed the tickover was quite high. the throttle had returned to its normal snapped back position, and the choke was obviously in as i only used it to fire it up then shut it off straight away.

The fuel in the tank maybe a little old but i wouldnt have thought that would cause it to tickover high. Also checked the throttle cables and turning the bars made no difference. the tickover eventually returned back to normal after a minute or so. blipping the throttle didnt alter it whilst it was high.

would it be wise just to adjust the tickover screw down (out) slightly or am i missing something ?

thanks guys

Sounds like you more or less answered your own question. Note you may also need to adjust the idle mixture screw a bit when you lower the idle speed.

Generally lower the idle speed screw, then tweak the mixture till the engine runs fastest but still smoothly. Keep repeating both steps till you get to where you are happy. Make sure the engine is at its normal operating temperatire when you do this.

You might find if you adjust it too slow, the engine will stall too often due to clutch drag when in gear with the clutch pulled.

my thoughts are that there isn't enough slack in the throttle. secondly, the slide on the sell orto gets an ugly groove in it sometimes underneath. simply pull the slide and with a 4mm file (the edge of a medium sized one is normally enough) smoothly file the ramp back as was.

finally, the other reason can be that the tickover is set right on the ignition advance line. frop the revs at the carb and the ignition will sort itself out.

Taffy

I dunno if it helps at all but my carb has on it 'Keihin' on the side and 'Flat CR' on hte top. also my ecu is kokusan. is this correct ?
just threw me when you mentioned dellorto :?:

prolly would help if you put the year of your fs650 in the signature line. carbs and ignitions changed in '04.

Hi Wheel,

Check the baffle plate on the slide and the baffle O ring.
