Thinking about jumping into the world of Husaberg...

OK, so I am ever-closer to jumping into the 'Berg club (on an 05 FS650c), but I still have a few questions (not deal-breaker questions, more like getting prepared questions). btw-I went through the parts and repair manuals already, but not carefully enough to clarify all the distinctions between the "c" and "e".

1) All 580 part numbers are KTM and 800's are Husaberg, right?

2) The oil changes and valve adjustments do not worry me, but have any of you split the cases to inspect rings on one of these things? What is involved as far as time and replacement parts? 90 hours of use (recommended) works out to what, about 3,000 miles? It goes without saying that this is a engine-out-of-frame procedure...
So far I found:
locking bolt 580.30.080.000
extractor 580.12.009.000
water pump gasket
clutch cover gasket
"gasket and o-ring in the water duct"
clutch holder 800.29.003.000
gear wheel segment 800.29.004.00
valve cover gaskets
chain breaker tool 800.29.030.000(if no master link used on the timing chain; some have it some don't)
special case-splitting tool 800.29.020.000

I am a little nervous now, to be honest with you...

3) Does the FS650c have the same stator and charging coil as the FS650e; in other words will it power a headlight and tail light when I add them? I want to make mine as minimally legal as possible. It will have a tag, headlight, and brake light but I'll roll the dice with hand signals. I am not worried about the DMV, just having a headlight and brake light.

4) I read somewhere the wiring harness is all there to add the headlight and tail light. Anybody know any different?

5) Can anyone get their hands on a price list for all the parts in the manual? The convenience the Munn website has me totally spoiled, and I sure hope I can find something similar for Husaberg...

6) What do you guys know about jetting/jet kits, etc. that are particular to these bikes? The bike comes with the same needle I'm running in my SMC... Unless I get some direction, I will start with a 42pilot, stock needle and try to get the main right. Then mess with the needle setting. I will use a dyno and sniffer...

I am sure I will think of more, but I sure would like to hear from some of you guys that already own one of these things! Frankly, I have slightly cold feet in selling my trusted KTM. My SMC should be putting out the same power with a pipe and cam. It's heavier than a 'Berg, but it's it's a known quantity to me and I have never even seen a 'Berg in the flesh.

What do you guys think?

Thanks,

Yuri

The distinction between the "c" and "e" is that the "e" model will have the turn signals and front head light stock, the "c" will not.

Not sure if this is the case or not, someone else may be able to better answer this.

Nothing to be nervous about, these bikes have proven to be as reliable as any other big displacement thumper out there except maybe the XR bikes. Once you have cracked the case on one of these things the first thing you will notice is the design simplicity of the Husaberg. In my opinion, if you can't work on a Husaberg, you shouldn't be working on motorcycles. Bergs have a minimum of parts compared to most bikes and most everything is straight forward. If you will be picking up the '05 bike, than that eliminates a lot of confusion with having to cross reference years as many of the 2000-2003 bikes had many upgrades, and part changes and some were even found to be mixes of different year bikes. If you have a firm grip on the mechanics of a single, there is really no reason to have doubts with this bike.

I am not 100% positive, but I believe that the bike will have the necessary lighting coil & output for you to do what you want.

4) I read somewhere the wiring harness is all there to add the headlight and tail light. Anybody know any different?

See above comments. I do believe you will have the necessary equipment to add the lights but someone will be along shortly to confirm.

5) Can anyone get their hands on a price list for all the parts in the manual? The convenience the Munn website has me totally spoiled, and I sure hope I can find something similar for Husaberg...

Aside from a few of the normal items, no. I am unaware of any web accessible price list for any Husaberg parts. Most of this information is probably available for dealers. You may be able to find some price averages for miscellaneous parts here on this site from members that have purchased parts but for the most part, contact your local dealer, im sure they will have no problem giving you quotes.

There are many members who have experimented with jetting and im sure would have no problem letting you in on some of there knowledge. Dale Lineaweaver, a local here, dose have a custom jetting kit for most all years and models of carbs and offers his services in other aspects of tuning. Ask and you shall receive! You can find his number as well as PM or email him and im sure he will do you right.

I am sure I will think of more, but I sure would like to hear from some of you guys that already own one of these things! Frankly, I have slightly cold feet in selling my trusted KTM. Yuri

Yuri, welcome to the site and search the forums for any info you need, most everything has been discussed 100x or more! Post any specific questions you have and the fine members of the UHE will be along to sort things for you lickety-split....

Regards,

In addition to sandskipper's post:

Another distinction between the FSc and FSe is that the "e" model will have
Michelin Pilot Sport tyres while the the "c" will be equipped with racing
slicks. Here in Germany slicks are not street legal...

And the 'E' model comes with kickstand, woohoo!

You should stop by a dealer and look closely at the differences between the C and E models. The bikes are basically the same except that the E model comes with many of the speedometer/signals/lighting accessories you may want for street use.

Thanks for the info so far. I have been reading posts from the site for the last couple hours :D Aside from some of my original questions remaining unanswered, I have not seen any mention of any of you guys road racing your 'Bergs (I saw a couple pics of DL's hybrid, but nothing else).

Obvioulsy, I am planning on roadracing the thing. How do they do running wide-open all day?

bmxr,
for the roadracing issue check out the SuperMoto Forum...
There are many SM racers around here like Simon or Jocke...
Above all Dale LINEAWEAVER is one of the most experienced
Husaberg tuners

Yuri:

Sorry I have not gotten back to you with those pics - I need to remove a couple of parts that cannot be sold with the bike. I'll be out of the office until Tuesday, but I'll take pics as soon as I can. Regarding your RR plans - Do you really hold the throttle wide-open all day ? I'm surprised that we have not heard of you sooner ;)

Cheers and best regards,

Brett Saunders

A couple of tips for you:

I also felt a little apprehesive at first, and some of those tools aren´t cheap.
I found that the case splitter was quite easy to make using .250" or 5mm steel plate, an M12 nut and bolt, a drill press and MIG welder.
A bit of ingenuity is needed to accurately transfer the bolt pattern from the engine. I bottomed the ign cover bolts and painted their heads with water soluble wall paint and laid the steel plate on top to transfer the paint. After drying, I scribed lines between the markings and got the center using a straightedge and angle. That´s where I drilled for the M12. The rest is easy.
If you buy a post 2003 bike, you will have roller bearings, and won´t need a case puller. Just use a rubber mallet and it should come apart easily.

The gear segment you don´t need for disassembly if you have an impact wrench and a long 30mm socket. You DO need it for assembly though, or you can use a wedge made of hardwood if you´re in a pinch. Works great!

The chain breaker is totally unnecessary in my opinion. Cover up the engine thoroughly with a sheet or large shop rag, except for a tiny hole where you want to break the chain and carefully grind the rivets off of the old chain lock with a Dremel and a cutting disc. Pry open with a screwdriver and you´re done. Clean with compressed air and remove the rag cover. You´ll probably replace the chain, but if not, just get a new rivet chain lock. Riveting the new lock is easily done with a center punch and heavy backing (small sledgehammer or block of steel).
The older removable chain locks are not 100% reliable, and the tiny lock rings can easily fall into the engine when you handle them. I have one handy though for hooking up a new chain to the old when replacing the chain by just removing the head cover. Rotate to replace.

Just a few hints if you rather spend the money on parts than tools.
The experts here might have other things to say, but it worked well for me.

/Peter

Brett,

I hear ‘ya on “holding it wide open all dayâ€Â

A few other differences between FE's & FC's, the FC's have bigger rotors & callipers, wider rims. Got an 05 FS650c PM me if you need help, It's an AWSOME bike, you'll never look at a KTM the same after riding the 'Berg, it's a whole different animal!

Thanks. I know John very well, and while he is a dealer, he does not have any bikes in stock for me to look at, although he did have a customer's 04 450 there today (the only Husaberg I have EVER seen). I am waiting for pics of a bike that Brett has and then maybe I will make up my mind what I want to do...
