Thanks sparks,
I suspected just as much.
There is a long thread in Other but I don't want to bore you with that because I've pretty much got it starting OK, give or take. It was starting beautifully but now tarnished with this little niggle and I'm now really wanting to understand the issues.
The weird thing I'm investigating is that when I turn the engine over when cold on the battery alone and it doesn't fire, if I switch on a booster connected in parallel to the battery, the engine fires immediately every time. Essentially it seems to boost the cranking voltage of the battery from about 11.4V to a smidgen over 12V. There is no increase in crank speed as it simply doesn't have the time to speed up and obviously it is not linked to the carb.
I might be completely wrong on this but to me this indicates something on the ignition side that is not just the stator and is pointing me towards another item that might help people with e-start problems.
My experience is showing that as long as the engine turns over on the e-start (not even particularly quickly), starting is not as dependent upon cranking speed as seems to be the most common opinion, nor is it entirely down to the stator as a lot of other suggestions imply. For me it therefore points in the direction of investigating this little white wire and the coil.
It's just some thoughts I'd like to gain answers upon.
All the best,
Simon
