Fun read!

I don't think I had actually seen the head before. It's beautiful!

What EFI system did you use?

Thanks, Ferðamaður!
I'm using a Megasquirt III system, Ducati 1198 throttle body and injector.

Excellent DR C, thanks for taking the time

not sure why they don't think the coffee percolator crank vent is the cutting edge of the project :D

Beats me too! Specially considering all that engineering and fabricating involved with it! ;)

Today some plumbing with the coolers!

If you don't have access to fancy tools making the necessary thickening on the cooling stub, a weld will have to do! Make sure there is enough piece of straight tube to fixate it in the lathe. Voila!

Problem-solving is fun.

I'm really curious about the EFI conversion. Did you have a timing wheel machined for the flywheel? Easy fit? How is the cam sensing done? (Is there only one canonical way to do that. .?)

Thats a novel right there... "Conversion" gives you the wrong idea. Development and manufacturing is more realistic! [emoji6]
The trigger is on the upper cam chain wheel and comes from one tooth only. I used a visual indication of TDC (on the flywheel) to calibrate the position of TDC against the tooth, which was done in the software. I have no sensor on the flywheel. Oh, no flywheel either for that matter!

The lousy machinist in my workshop, probably the same b-stard that misplaces my tools all the time, managed not to get the cylinder sleeve flange square. So I had to machine a shaft to put the sleeve on, just to shave off 0,04mm to make the flange square and equally thick. Hm. I do not seem to have any problems keeping myself busy...

nice Dr_C

I had to do the same to put a groove in the top surface of my liner for a guitar string.

I'm curious if you found any contact between the big end OD and the cases and how much clearance seems to be necessary.

do we have the same problem Bergsmlerg ? .. that bastarto who steals the firecrackers must be the same one :D

Is this b-stard the same person who makes trouble with beer and firecrackers Mats ?

The very same! A real pain sometimes but he´s the only one working for free in this project. Otherwise I would have canned him long time ago...

On old drag racing trick! I use a fabric thread in this engine to keep compression on the head gasket, to prevent coolant from leaking! Very "high tech"!

No contact at all! I think I had about 0,5-1,0 mm clearance. Can't check that until my liner is back from... "honing"?

firecracker fuse is best

re. the FI - very interesting!, so do I get this right, the sensor on the cam is all the timing data that the ECU gets for ignition and fueling? at any rate the fi must have been fun to solve, very interesting to think about at least

Yes, one trigger for both fuel and ignition on the cam (well, same rev at least). That means no wasted spark (higher energy available, less power consumtion). Flip side could be less accurate ignition on low revs (varying speed during one cycle), but I do not operate much in that region...

!interesting! ... thanks

Maybe this is all covered in the previous thread? I skimmed but didn't find info - but I wanted to ask what sensors you have?

I'm doing a gedankenexperiment on updating my DR-Z to 2000's EFI technology :)

I purchased most of the equipment and sensors from MegaSquirt | Engine Management System | Electronic Fuel Injection - DIYAutoTune.com
That's one safe way of ensuring everything works together. The cam sensor is a normal Hall effect sensor, which I bought from: https://www.elfa.se/elfa3~se_sv/elfa/init.do?item=73-490-38&toc=19236

How would you suggest I connect my coolers? Parallel/in series, flow direction?
