the sprocket size? which is best?

I'm surprized about my sprocket sizes. Up to the impression on the power of the bike I was expecting a bigger rear sprocket and a smaller front.. before ordering the new ones I counted the teeth number on them
and rear is 40teeth / front 15 teeth..

I'll order 48 rear and 14 front / I'll loose 25% of my top speed but I think my friction plates will last longer.. am I wrong?

**** and the most important question is : will my chain be ok with the new sprockets or will I have to make it longer?

thanks,

Mesut

urgent reply please, I'm about to order

Hi!

The chain may fit if the rear wheel is mounted at the back of swingarm ( where you adjust the chain tension )

Hope you understand=)

sorry for the bad english...

you will need at least 2 links on your chain. i suggest that you buy an oversize chain because the shops will normally say 114 or 118 or 122 etc etc. you can use a grinder to break links off or you can order a link breaker whilst you're at it. i always buy oversize and then break a link off etc.

For general Bush riding most people find 14 - 48 gearing ideal. On open desert ride just up front to 15 tooth for 160KMH

I thought that the original size of the sprockets are 48/14 if the bike is new.. and I thought that my bikes sprockets are changed by the former owner ..

So which is the original set of sprockets..

You are correct. I went up two teeth on the rear sprocket on my 470. This works perfectly for me. It may however cause you have to shift too much on the 450. Try the stock gearing before you make any changes. I am leaving the gearing stock on my 450. The least I have to shift the better I like it :)

A Rekluse Autoclutch may make you happier than a gearing change.

Take a look at how close your chain is
to the frame and swing arm near the
counter shaft sprocket before you go
smaller in front.

mdogruc,

Here is a link to sprocket ratios in my gallery. Take a look and see what combination will work best for you. As t-jet-tim had said, "Take a look at how close your chain is to the frame and swing arm near the counter shaft sprocket before you go smaller in front", as the chain will grind a nice groove in your frame and swing arm if the counter shaft sprocket is of to small a radius.

Regards,

My sprockets and chain arrived today, I'll mount them tomorrow and tell you the result. Theory and practise don't usually match so let me do and see..

thankyou very much for your replies,

Mesut

I mounted the new sprockets and the chain today..

the chain is 520 / 118 links.. I was very anxious about the length of the chain before it arrived , had doubts about its fitting with the new big rear sprocket.... SURPRISE: I had to cut 4 pins from the edge of the chain..

So to the ones who'll order chain.. don't doubt about the size.. 118 links is way too long for any combination..

take care..

Mesut

sorry i was so lazy. thinking back, i have 14/51 and could have given you the extreme the other way and got you closer. now you know though!
