Hi All,

First - wanted to say hello and what a great site and a great bunch.

Well, Ive done it! Ive bought a beautiful 2008 FE450. :D Although it will be a week or two before she arrives at the dealer...

I was hoping I could call upon your guys vast Berg knowledge and ask a couple of things -

1. What essentials do I need to invest in for the new beast. I guess skid/bash plate, handguards and at 6'1" probably 20mm bar risers... anything else??

2. What essential tools will I need for the basic maintenance/service??

Thanks very much for your help,

Mat.

Congratualtions on joining the Berghood. I got a new 650 last year, I'm a bit taller, ad perhaps heavier. In my gallery here http://www.husaberg.org/index.php?set_a ... php&page=1 is what I did to get set up for riding pleasure. In addition, I got the suspension dialled with 46 fork springs and a 9.7 rear with damping to suit which is the most important bit.

Steve

Brilliant!

Wow, Thanks Steve, Great pics, great bike and extremely useful!

Hi Mat,

Congrats on your purchase.

Are you planning on running a steering damper? If you are then buy the sub mount kit like steve and I have, it will raise the bars about 25mm's. And with the sub mount you will be able to run the bars in a few different positions, where as with just the top clamp mount system you are locked into one bar postion, save for how much you can rotate the bars in the clamp.

The best thing about the sub mount is that you don't have to worry about catching the bar clamp in the face or throat like I did once.

I also agree with Steve that it is money well spent to get the correct springs and valving for your type of riding.

Best of luck!

Hi Mat, You have a great motorcycle on the way! I am 6'4", and found that raising the bars, then placing them 3 out of the 4 positions forward, really dialed them in. Husaberg sells a tall seat, which I think is excellent. The nice thing about buying the factory tall seat is that the standard seat is always available, you will have two complete seats. Some of the folks on this site like the GUTS tall seat, as well as a couple of other ones on the market. I use a PDS4 rear spring, and 46 front springs, I weigh about 200lbs.
Pick out an excellent synthetic motor oil, and change the oil frequently. The owners manual will fill you in on other needs to attend to. Enjoy that 450!

ride it stock for a while so you can compare to your addjustments. yeah the bar position is adjustible, and some risers help but not necessary, even a tall seat maybe but I am 6'5". check the jetting because here in the USA the bikes come too lean from factory. Stock gearing is a bit tall for trails and woods, you may wnat to drop one tooth on the CS.

But again I recommend on this bike as any new bike to ride it stock for a while first. I had an 06 Fe450e and the bike, if jetting set right from the dealer, is really pretty sweet as is right out of the box.

ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!!!

how much do you weigh mat?

go into comfort in the owner's doc and suss the bar risers, taller seat and hand and sump guards. don't think a waterpump gaurd is at all necassary.

trails or enduro?

Top Advice

Thanks for the top advice....

I weigh 11 Stone (about 155 pounds?) and will be using the bike for Hare & Hounds, the odd Enduro - (Dawn to Dusk etc), The HUMM (Horizons Unlimited Mountain Madness in the Pyrenees) and Trail riding...

I was thinking when it arrives at the dealers to maybe get a few essentials? done prior to picking her up, but as you say maybe its best to ride stock for a while and add them as I go...

Thanks for the advice.. you guys really know your Bergs.. it is much appreciated.

RE: Top Advice

suspension is critical at any weight but at 11 stones it's everything!

they handle well out the crate, possibly the best you've ridden but because of the PDS yyou have to work at the suspension.

yep, bark busters and sumpguard. BTW i don't have the sumpguard as it holds too much mud.

Nah, the Poms buy and sell with pounds.

As an aside, why is it that the British imperial system of measurement was modified by the Yanks, what advantages were achieved by doing so?

I gotta agreee with Froggy that the metric system is so much simpler. Its interesting though that we over here who metricated in 1972 still use feet and inches to describe people's height, psi for tyre pressures and mpg for fuel economy. I think the rest is dead, but even my kids know how tall 6 feet is!

Steve

Yeah Steve,

We Poms are just the same, feet and inches, miles, mph, mpg, psi, drive on the left, pints of beer, (gallons of beer on Friday/Saturday night) a pound of bacon & half a dozen eggs (fry up on Sunday morning). If its not broke why fix it?? Happy Days...

Oh yeah, ... Acerbis or Ego Barkbusters?? and Husaberg factory skid/bashplate or something else??

Cheers Chaps

Mat.

mm up to an inch then inches and feet, yards and halves and quarters of miles after that!

acerbis for me and non-oem for tyour plate will do!

Taffy
