the new big tank, observations

so, i got my 06-07 kickstarter, and i set about installing the tank. am i the only one that finds the position of the left petcock to be slightly bizarre? i don't know if later bikes come with different petcocks, but mine has a choice of pointing either directly at the cylinder, so the hose won't even fit (about 45 deg to the right of dead ahead, or else it points back and slightly out (about 45 deg to the left and back). fortunately i still had one of the really short curved pieces of the original fuel line in a drawer, so i think i have something i can live with.

other than that, pretty straightforward. i put gas in the tank and turned the petcocks on to see if it leaks anywhere before i go ride it. just sitting on the bike it doesn't seem to affect ergonomics at all for me, which is cool.

it appears that the little aluminum sleeves that attach the tank at the front (where the shrouds used to be) are longer than the the part of the tank they fit in, so the shroud portion of tthe tank is free to move slightly, and (i guess) not transmit all force instantly to the cheesy little tab on the frame where the black plastic thingy for the radiator louvres attaches. at least i hope that's how it's supposed to work.

i'll be happy to have this tank. i did a fairly spirited ride with LOTS of deep sand last week, and not only lost my $350 gps from my brand new ram mount, but also finished the ride with literally less than 1/4 cup of gas in the tank. i usually only leave 1 petcock open, and it ran out at 51 miles, so i turned the other one on and started getting nervous, since i was 9-ish very sandy miles from the truck. luckily i had lizardkiller w/me, so i could probably have poached some 2-stroke gas from her.

anyway, that's all there is so far. i'll be curious to see what other folks do for fuel line routing. i was unable (with the fuel line bits i had sitting aorund the garage) to figure out a way to include the inline fuel filter i've been running, but i'm probably just being anal anyway.

thanks to senor bozarth for getting the whole tank thing done.

You may have to install an aftermarket petcock on the one side for optimum fit. I know thats how it is with my aluminum tank. I purchased a few petcocks from Rick. I'm waiting until I recieve them untill I try to mount my tank.

i'm waiting to hear how it goes for you before i order one. hopefully ricky has stocked up, lol. it actually wouldn't bother me at all to pay a reasonable price for 2 new petcocks and a little fuel line and just be able to swap the tanks in a few minutes. i probably would never do it, but just knowing that i could would make me feel better.

Thanks for the report Velo. I'm anxiously awaiting for my tank from Rick. I also like to run an in line filter. I have collected a wide variety of petcocks over the years from Huskys, Yamahas and KTMs and hopefully I'll find a setup that works with a filter. I had to use a petcock from an SX model KTM to get the fuel line from an IMS tank to the carb on my old WR250 2 stroke. Having the fuel drawn from both sides of the tank is worth the hassle though.

takis

sent me a photo of a husky petrol tap that had a knurled knob to turn to open. the knob was below the petcock and was a perfect fit.

it should be easy to get petcocks that have the face 90 degrees to the bolts and the outlet 90 degrees to that or the same. KTM use them....

Velo, Ya that left side is some funkdubiousness with stock petcocks, I ordered some after market ones similar to the ones Rick had on his bike at Moab. I've not had a chance to attach them and re-mount the big tank, but it appears that it will be cleaner and I like the idea of being able to switch tanks quickly without the hassel of changing two petcocks every time !

I also have received my tank but not installed it yet. Since I wasn't able to attend Moab I didn't get to see the petcock that Rick is running. What is it off of? Here is a pic of a Husky 610 valve that Bergoracer uses wih the stock tank:

the little knob ones? where? how much?

Not sure about the ones Ron speaks of, but Taffy and Hasabutt seem to indicate the petcocks used on the left side of the old school Husky thumpers. I believe they are an Acerbis part, that come stock on these bikes. If Rick doesn't have them Dan at Motoxotica might as they are a factory Husqvarna part. I have an extra one, but am waiting for my new tank to try it out.

Velo,
Yes, they are the screw type. I believe Rick quoted me $24 each and has them in stock. They are the same petcocks used on the underseat tanks if that helps any.

:) I know.............but others may not. Used his screen name in case someone wanted to check out his extensive gallery.

I just went and ordered an 06-07 kick start lever. They had a Husky 610 petcock, as pictured above, in stock. I don't know the price as I haven't been charged yet (good customer :) ) For those interested the part # is 800067440. I will probably order a Clarke billet gas cap as my kid broke his plastic one where the vent hose attaches during a get-off. Any suggestions for a very small fuel filter?

For what its worth, my new 07 650 has a conventional tap on the right and a knob one on the left standard. Might be an Oz thing. Could be a Berg part too.

Velo, Not the knob kind , Bought off Clarke's web site $16.50 ea. plus S/H can't find my receipt right now.

Does anyone know the difference between the "old" kick starter and the '06/'07? I bought my '05 in April of last year. It was still crated and I had to wait to pick it up because they were swapping on an '06 exhaust, kick starter and they also said they were "upgrading" the clutch to '06 specs. I don't know if this was BS but I don't want to pop for a new kick starter until I get my tank and see for myself weather or not it was changed. Thanks!

Husky, the 05 and earlier are fairly straight and angular, the 06/07 has a bit of a bend about 1/2 way up the shaft that tucks it in toward the center of the bike more.

Cool! I appear to have the newer one-thanks Ron!

My 06 650 has the same set up as Steve's. tap on the right and knob on the left. I had a 05 KTM 640 Adventure before the Berg and it had knob taps on each side of the big 25.5ltr tank connecting the cross over hose. The Berg knob tap looks identical to the KTM knob tap. Makes sense that they use the same tap as KTM own them both. While I had the Berg apart I noted that many parts had KTM on them, even the wiring loom has a KTM label on it.

Garry.
