The dreaded stator? - place your bets please

Well, today I was down at the dyno to test 15 different prototype exhaust and silencer systems that a few of you know I've been tinkering with over the past few years.

9 runs in and she starts behaving a bit funny. Starts one minute, stops the next, won't start for a huge bunch of kicks and then suddenly goes. Wouldn't even bump start on the dyno.

Then we got her started and off she flew for a momentary run in the middle of which there's a massive blip in the curve and a start up again.

Then nada......

Oh well, pissed off at missing the dyno time and the associated cost but I do have a spare in the garage at least and I will take another spare with me next time :)

A brief overview of the results is under another thread in Exhaust.

All the best,
Simon

In the absence of ohm readings on the stator, it sounds like an upper ignition to me unfortunately. I'v had a coupld of those go bad on me. They do a few funny things, one would only act up when I rode the bike hard, and it was like an invisible finger pushing the kill switch. Another would run fine for about 20 minutes and then the bike would just quit and wouldn't restart for about an hour then repeat the process. The one that's bad now runs fine initially, or until it starts to get hot then it acts like it won't take all the fuel and kind of goes flat, then you back off and try it again and it goes fine.

Hope this helps,

Dale

Hi Simon,

If it turns out to be the stator, could I interest you in one of my rewound units it would be interesting to see how it performs on the dyno.
From all the feed back I get my rewound units seem to have increased bottom and midrange power.
i'll place my bet and say it's the stator that's gone South. I don't know what odds you are giving but I'll put a tenner on it.

Regards

Sparks.

DaleEO,

Thanks for the suggestion, it hadn't occurred to me. I have one of those as a spare in my garage too, so I'll do a chop an that too. I appreciate it.

Husabutt,

Absolutely, and it is finally looking promising. An update is in the Exhaust section.

Sparks,

You certainly could interest me in one of your units should it be the problem. I'll PM you. I'd be pleased to chuck it on the dyno too!

All the best,
Simon

simon

i owe you a favour. i've got one arriving back from steve this week. steve is quick but the post each way is slow. so instead of waiting 4-6 weeks, especially now as it's christmas - you're welcome to have mine till when.

Taffy,

That's really decent of you to offer. I have a spare but used stator in the garage that I can throw on there at least for the moment, but I'll let you know how that goes.

Now, if you and Steve are interested to see a back to back comparison with the OEM stator when I go down to the dyno next, then I'm sure I can get the extra time to do that check - two birds n' all that. What do you think?

Re: RE: Re: The dreaded stator? - place your bets please

Simon that would be interesting back to back, I've just said to Taffy that about 90% of people that get back in touch say the engine starts very easy even off the lecky hot or cold where as before they would be lucky to restart it even when hot.
Also the bottom to mid range power seemed to be a lot sharper.

Regards

Steve.

when i get it i'll send it on to you. just PM me your address and it'll be done. IMHO i don't think that at the revs we're on about we'll get a valid and honest difference but it's worth trying.

Hey chaps,

The crisis have been averted as it turns out it was just a dodgy spark plug. Yes, I know, I need a slap for being so stupid for not checking it sooner....

I've actually been down to the dyno this morning as there was a slot free, but I will be going back after new year, so, if you still want me to test the rewound stator, I very happy to do it then. It also gives us all a bit of time.

Had some very interesting and positive results on the dyno.

All the best,
Simon
