Here is a side by side comparsion shock needle 2005. The telescoping is from Race Tech Inc. I will do a test project on the 'telescoping needle' and latter post the results on my web site, under 'Suspension'.

Pay close attention to the shaft bore clearance... I had one of these work great, for about 15 minutes. The needle seized inside the shock shaft.

Now I run a Bob Bell needle exclusively.

In 2001 our bikes had a long thin tapering needle, which according to my suspension tuner ( Steve Searcy @ clean racing) worked well with a straight rate spring, which I agree. The bike came with a rising rate spring.

So now they have gone to a short fat needle to give a big increase in damping right at the end of the stroke, which coincidentally works well with a rising rate spring. Again, I have to agree, my 2004 susupension works great.

I don't mean to insult 2005 fc550 in anyway shape or form by my next statement. Let me reapeat, 2005FC550 I do not intend to insult you or slight you in anyway.

You know what, I just wrote and deleted a full story of my experience with Race Tech from a year ago, along wth my opinion of Race Tech. But, decideded not to print it so as to not make anyone feel bad. So, I'll just say that it has been my experience that with the right tuning of the shim stack, and the right spring, the stock needle works just fine.

I hope 2005FC550 has the best of luck with the tapered needle.

Bobzilla had the suspension done by Race Tech and me and him weigh the same +/- 5 lbs.

I swear that after my first "faster" ride of the previous week-end, I am very happy with the suspension and that I consider it pretty much set. I will check the sag just to see what it's at, but as far as the forks and the rear, it's the best setup I ever had.

I will ask Bob what he had done by RT on this bike.

Personally I am not a fan of Race Tech inc. There customer service has some what degraded over the past few years. I use Paloverde MX for my shock and forks. Since knowledge on the Husaberg shock has limited data. Mainly due to small amount rider input, as compared to Honda or Yamaha factory riders. I got the Telescoping needle about eight months ago. Testing and making shim adjustments every month, I finally reached a point, it is time to test the telescoping needle.

Conclusion: After riding on the same track and same bumps, I did not notice any major differences. I continued to make changes with damping and rode again. There were very small changes on the mid to bottom stroke. I am not completely satisfied, but still testing. I will take the shock apart again to check the needle and make other changes. Do I recomend to go buy the Telescoping needle, NOT YET.
