Technical question about my new Husaberg

Hey guys,

I just picked up my brand new 2004 model FE501 today!

Just took it for a half hour first ride, engine didn't run great, and when i returned home I saw the exhaust-header was RED-hot. I wundered what could have been wrong. Then I noticed I have been driving fot half an hour with the hot-choke turned on!

Now I'm a bit concerned I might have caused some damage to the engine (burned valves or so)...

Can anyone tell me if there is any risk of damage on a new bike after driving with the hot-choke on??

Thanx!
Proemer

if the exhaust was glowing red it has got real hot obviously, i would suggest you change the oil.

Sounds like you are running lean. Running with the hot start button will definatly do that. If you did run it with the hot start button out, I wouldnt think there would be any damage, but there is a possibility.
If the hot start was not engaged you may have to rejet. Here in the US it is almost manditory and most dealers will rejet the bike before delivery to the customer.

Hey dude, I , HGM, would think you're likely all right if you didn't run it too hard. You didn't run it too hard, did you? The fact that it didn't run too good indicates it probably couldn't build much power and consequently get a lot of combustion chamber heat. The glowing pipes are sometimes unburnt fuel in the exhaust due to the lean misfires. Have a good time with your new bike, you lucky bastard! :D

Thanks for the replies,

Ik didn't run hard and didn't rev it much, it was my first run on the bike.

I'm a bit wurried about the exhaust-valves, can they stand so much heat (when they are new)?

Greetz...

It takes a relatively small amount of heat to make a header glow. It takes a lot more to burn an exhaust valve. When you're really hammering your bike the pipe is glowing anyway, after you consider the cooling effect of the airstream flowing over it. Don't worry, be happy! :D

I will also agree, on various mcycles, (especially Yamaha), if you were to view the header in dark conditions will glow red at an idle condition. Some say it is not normal, but some bikes just seem to do it without consequence. I would change oil, and dependent upon the advice of others here, maybe hit my first valve adjustment, but I would ride like the wind... 8)

couple weeks ago, out in the pits my header pipe was glowing, bike had been idling hot for 5-7 minutes.....I thought it to be pretty normal
didn't notice it when I came back from a heat race....
