having failed to tighten one of the tappet screws the week before i had smashed the top of the rocker box. i didn't find anything in the sidecover so i just dropped and swopped the oil.
in the meantime i needed a new alu welder and my contact didn't get back to me. by midweek i panicked and started calling dealers up.
guess what, SR off-road, my dealer have just started breaking an '02 400 engine and i got the cover for that.
only starting work fully at 3pm saturday i had to swop the two top ends as the new cover-granted they were free!-had the '02 cam followers and i wasn't going to trust them.
other work;
changed the jetting back to previous best.
new camchain fitted.
cam timing done.
frame guards.
the track was near tunstall, near ipswich and the kind of track i race on with eastern centre 'hot rods' usually. but this was the rather more genteel TBEC club! the course was 12 miles around and mostly single track on sand which cut up easily and whooped out.
funny moment of the day was when some old tosser sat in his ford tranny and whilst trying to get his fat arse in his jeans bibbed the hooter twice! this is how we call a riders breifing and with that 180 riders turned up 20 minutes early. did i mention how cold it was? friggin cold! very funny though!
we were told that the normal 2 + 2 was now going to be a MF straight 4-hour race! back to the car for more drinks and sweeties....
the race
off we went and the bike started first time. had a real job passing the riders in forestry area and all the time there are cut off trees with 6" showing-lethal for the unwary and better to let someone else experiment with new routes.
got going with a clear track and met very few riders all day, after a while i began to realise i wasn't tiring and that i was infact recovering a lot of situations with ease, this gave me a lot of confidence and i started to push on a bit.
there were 2 other huseys there and one of them was sparko who i had the privilage of meeting afterwards for a good chat. as you'll see, i rode an extra lap and asked if he'd get me some course tape in as i was so shattered. this he obliged with-cheers mark!
at the stop i got 1.5 gals in after 2 hours and off i went again and fell at the very first bloody corner! rhythem mr lloyd, rhythem!!! get into your bloody rhythem!
felt so good near the end that i pushed the boat out on the last lap and took the risk of breaking my rhythem. but i held it well and took 3-minutes off my consistant 33's (or whatever) without a fall.
after all the work and hassle over the previous 7-days i was glad this went well. may have summink up with the gearbox now but we'll see!
the bike is in it's fourth season of racing and i've only replaced the camchain twice and the valves once. so i may owe it a pint or two!
