i want to paint my panels , but i am not sure what type of plastic they are made of , so not sure what plasticisor or what amount to use , to ensure flexibility and a good bond.

i have added a pdf with different types of plastic listed .

can anyone point me in the correct direction.

Polypropylene would be my guess. Just when and had a look at my spare tank there is no markings to indicate what it is. The 2K Plastic Primer seems to cover most on the list. I have read on the net articles, some have success others don`t. Ask your paint supplier they should be able to help. Cheers spanner.

Hi spanner, i asked my local paint supplier but they hav'nt realy got a clue.

trouble is the plastics are unleaded proof therefore solvent proof to a certain degree.,

i did warm one panel up and the surface was sticky, maybe this is the way to go ?

Hi Scrap,
Painting dirtbike plastics seldomly works well.
The paint on the tank normally bubbles because the tank plastic needs to 'breathe' and the bike ends up looking tatty when the paint starts to bubble / flake/ peel.
Have you considered vinyl decals?
If you don't want to go with any of the standard stciker kits (some are pretty lairy), a vinyl specialist should be able to make-up stickers to any size & shape you require if you provide them with a pattern.
Failing this, you could try getting your hands on some old plastics off of ebay and working out which paint works by trial & error.
Sorry I can't think of anything better....

reproduction decals might do it if you send them your shrouds and tank I know they don't have a template for a 99 berg, and its riding season almost so i'm going to wait and send them to him next winter.

Dirt bike plastics are generally made from Polypropylene. This is the hardest type of plastic to get paint to adhere to as it is shiny and slick. If you thoroughly wet sand with 600 grit paper and use the best automotive paint you can find (urethane with clear coat) you will get pretty good results. A plastic adhesion promoter should applied first followed by the color and then clear. Top quality urethane paint will be flexible enough without a flexible additive. As said previously painting the tank should be avoided due to fuel permeation. It would probably be much less expensive to purchase all new plasic than purchase high quality automotive paint. How about a chrome Berg? :)

thanks for the replies guys, think what i will do is take your advise and get some stickers made up and maybe just spray around the edges of the panels on the swathe line :)
on second thoughts . i've just scanned the net and nothing sticks to polypropylene, they make paint mixing pots out of the stuff

i will just go with the stickers.
