I'm looking at buying a new 2010 FE 450 (since I can't find a reasonably priced 390) and thought I might try this X bolt bushing for the rear heim joint to drop the suspension a tiny bit so I can put a toe down. Anyone try this? I'm also going to respring to PDS5 rear shock and will keep the 4.4 stock springs until after breakin. A revalve etc later but I only have so many dollars!

Thanks all! LadyBerg

I put about a thousand miles on my '10 FE450 as a stock suspension. I hadn't had so much ground time due to tip overs in years. It seemed I couldn't do any single track without several falls. I put on the offset bushing and reduced the front fork travel the same 7/8' to compensate. It is an entirely new bike! I couldn't be happier and have stayed upright ever since. I am 6' and about a 31" inseam. I recently talked a friend into this mod but we are expecting to due the install tomorrow. The slowest part of the install is where you need to cut the swing arm boss. Do this with a burr on a dremel then finish with a sanding drum. I'm sure you and he will like it as well as I did. I now have a little over a thousand miles since I did it and can find no reason to ever go back. I still have plenty of clearance for single track log jumping. Hope this helps - go for it.

CMSprofessor, thanks for the feedback! I figured it's worth a try then I can change it back to stock if I want. I'm about 5' 8" and practically need a step stool to climb aboard the Berg.

Did you really drop the forks 7/8"? I find no mention anywhere on what to set this at in relation to the bushing setup. About how long did it take to install the bushing? Thanks Colleen

this coincides with similar work I did last season and all being well I'll also be fitting this joint.

Ladyberg
what he did was to lower the bike at the back and then lowered it by the corresponding amount at the front to keep- the body language (you call it body english I believe) the same.

Hi all,

Just purchased the x bushing and z bolt.

How much do you need to raise the front forks to even front and rear??????

If I adjust the z-bolt all the way down to .875" (7/8") how much do I raise the forks .875>>>>>>>>>????????????????

If so how far can you raise the bars without cable conflict????

All knowledge and experience is appricated Thank You.........

you should have measured the height to your seat tail or similar and then with the X bushing in you make sure that it's set the same. that is your default setting. measure to a point up front as well and from then on go testing.

it really isn't that difficult is it?

Installed the X bolt, Z bushing with only 1/2 hour on the bike and I can't say that it does much to lower the bike much more than 14mm at the very best. It's not the best 'fit and finish' and I had a real hard time getting the bolt in to mount up my shock for some reason. No interference from the shock clevis or PDS bump and I'm thinking the plastic inner bushing/bearing may have been undersized. It appears to be Delrin but not sure.

After riding the bike on road and twice at the indoor MX track I have play in the bushing that shows up in my shock as free play after 4 hours only! Well I pulled the shock and found that the PDS bump (I need a more techinical name for this) and the inside of my shock clevis was banged up! Oh come on I don't fly that high over the jumps!!! So I'm done with it I think. But I may try contacting Synergy Systems to find out what happened yet no phone # on their website.

I'm back to square one and I'll drop the suspension the old fashioned way...via 1" spacers front and rear. Sending parts out to Dale E O to work his magic!

very odd, I've had mine for some time, and i never got any play in the swingarm "boss" after time I would get play in the center insert and simply replace it as a wearable item, email Rob at Synergy, he is a good guy...I'm sure he will take care of you.

Are you in the "7:30" position, or the "9:00" position.

I'm currently at 7:30 because I didn't want to take too much off the "boss" or clevis. I would say that it lowered it around ~12mm, which was enough for me to add the tall soft seat and still be able to reach the ground with my feet.

Wow, what a shame, LadyBerg. I was kind of interested in that setup myself. Hope you get some resolution.

Ladyberg it sounds as if you may not have taken enough material off the swingarm/clevis and when the shock went through it's travel it was binding and hence the wear. I just put one into a 570 and I first removed the spring so I could see full travel. I also placed a light in front of the joint and cut material until there was about .025" clearance all the way through the arc of travel. The 7/8" raising of the forks just keeps it the same geometry but I may experiment dropping them a bit this summer in Colorado. This would be to improve the high speed stability by effectively giving me more rake. After a little over 1000mi. there is zero play in the joint. Don't give up yet.

Nope I did check prior to installation for enough material removal and had prox 1mm clearance through full shock stroke. I have a machinery design build background and hubby owned a large machine shop so designing and making parts is what I know. I knew I shouldn't have gone this way by removing material from stock parts to make an aftermarket part fit. Learned my lesson.

BTW...the F bolt has slop when installed in the x bushing this is WHY I banged up my shock clevis and PDS mount.
