swing arm needle rollers-which way?

here is my dilemma

i have often had knackered swingarm needle rollers. i think i've found out why today. you see i have always put that rubber lip that the rollers have at only one end, i've always put it with the inbuilt seal on the outside so that in any pair they are as far apart as possible.

then i've fitted the rubber seals as well.

but now i realise that water has been entering freely into the gap between the two bearings and nothing has stopped the water rusting things up. i've only just noticed that the inside of the swingarm 'legs' enter into the bearing area. why on earth do husaberg let that happen! that's crazy!

so from now on the inbuilt rubber seal will go on each side of the spacer. NEAR THE MIDDLE. and the outside spacers will be left to protect from that end!

water may enter but it will get nowhere except to rust the hollow dowel in the middle.

has anyone else who shares the UKs wetter climate noticed this long before me? sorry but i must have been slow on this one!

i think i've found out why there is so much slack between the shaft and the dowels and that's because there is the possibility that we're all using different manufacturers for these items.

i've just had a special pin made that doesn't fit my new dowels. the inner i/d is smaller and consequentally i'll have to have the shaft reduced by a few thou.

however all being well i shall still have a better job at the end...

That should get rid of the flex shouldn`t it. Racers should keep a eye on this. Thanks Taffy

ok i've ended up reaming the inside of the dowels and i hope that the next set i but will be like the last set. unfortunately the INSIDE DIA IS NOT A SPEC THAT THE MANUFACTURERS AGREE ON.

Hi there Taffy, I'm doing my 400 right up at the mo, and just put new bearings in it, the bearings i got - from a local bearing supplier were sealed both sides and my arms legs! don't go into the bearing area. Mine's a 2003 model though so maybe they sorted it? Does your bike still vibrate like a........ um, vibratey thing? i'm just doing the crank on the 400 but i'm gonna put some mallory metal weights in if yours is bad. Jared

"were sealed both sides and my arms legs! don't go into the bearing area. Mine's a 2003 model though so maybe they sorted it?"

didn't understand that sorry!

my bike vibrates without the balance shaft which i'm putting back in when i next strip it.

TAFFY i am bracing the frame in the area of the swinging arm pivot and also trying to take out the sideways slack on the arm (shim washer to weld on the inside of frame) i will let you know how it goes.

that'll be innteresting! just don't leave it 6-months before you post again ya hear!

:D :D

it wont be to long as the race season starts in march ( supermoto) i am also making new front mounting plates out of 6m hardend alloy. i am sick of the standard ones cracking.

that reminds me, i've got one cracking i must do something about it. bloody balancer missing has done it.

thanks for the reminder...

sorry it has been a long time taffy, the motor is back in now with 6mm stainless plates instead of the alloy ones (4mm). also we have braced the cradle of the frame, before welding the plate in i measured the mounting point on the motor. the frame rails were clamped to the right measurements and the plate welded in . swinging arm wise the frame has been powder coated and is now a snug fit ,i hope to tell you how it rides soon.
