Supermoto gearing

I bought a 550 a while back, and I'm doing some testing.
On my home track 15-38 is a tad too light. I need a slightly heavier gearing. When that is said. I don't use 6th now, which I'd like to.

I use a Close ratio 6-speed box. I don't know the ratio in the box. Does anyone know what gearing I need to make the bike a bit taller geared but in 6th instead of 5th?

14-38, 15-40?

I'm using 15-42 now in my 550 whit a "standard" 6 speed gearbox.
Last year I ran 15-40 but that was no good for my speed out of the corner.
This year I also tried 15-44 but that I didn't like.
I was looking for gearing were I can use my 5th and 6th gears but thats not easy.
I also found out my 5th and 6th are overdrives so I stick whit 15-42 that seems to be the best for me around most off the tracks here in Holland.

Vegard,

I'll try not to make this response too long/painful to read. I assume we have the same gearing in 5th and 6th gears: 5th in the manual is a ratio of 24 primary to 22 countershaft (=1.091), 6th is 27/22 (=1.35), as husaracer noted above-- both are overdrives. Your stock gearing is 15-38 which gives a ratio of 2.53 (which we will call "light"). When I do the math, you need a "heavier" ratio of 3.135 to give you as a usable 6th gear (as your current 5th gear now).

For example at 8,000 rpm now in 5th gear, your calculated speed would be 149kph (184 in 6th). If you run 15/46 (3.1 ratio) your 6th gear speed at 8,000 rpm would be 152kph (123 in 5th).

Good luck finding what works best for you...

Thank you guys. I was thinking of trying a 15-42 combo on tomorrows practice. Might be too heavy, but we'll soon find out!
Cheers!
